This weekend the 2014-15 stakes racing action kicks off in Melbourne at Flemington Racecourse with the running of the Aurie’s Star Handicap 2014– betting tips on the early spring lead-up detailed right here.
Due to jump as Flemington Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEST) there were originally 13 in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).
That is now down to a dozen runners after the early scratching of #4 Pillar Of Creation who had drawn the rails meaning all the runners now come in one place and the inside alley now belongs to #3 Zamorar.
Aurie’s Star Handicap betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is led by market mover Tiger Tees ($3.40), Joe Pride’s Group 1 The Galaxy winner targeting the early spring sprints with odds firming on the known wet tracker.
Punters can back them stress free at Ladbrokes too as they’re offering money back on all first fixed win bets that finish second up to $50 in Saturday’s Aurie’s Star!
There are then four other single figure fancies in the markets including the aforementioned last start winner at the track Zamorar ($4.80) for Seymour trainer David Bourne and Pat Hyland’s 2012 Aurie’s Star winner Shanghai Warrior ($6).
So will one of the shorter priced hopes take it out?
Or is there an upset Aurie’s Star Handicap result on the cards from the likes of the David Hayes-trained import Crackerjack King ($34) finally having their maiden Aussie run or 2014 Caulfield Cup-bound mare Text’n Hurley ($15) who is also likely to find the distance a bit sharp?
#1 Tiger Tees ($3.40)
Money coming for Pride’s classy sprinter even though they carry the hefty 59.5kg top weight. Those are kilos the now seven-year-old can handle however. Awesome autumn form in Sydney but ran last (7th) in the BTC Cup last time out on firmer ground. Need a soft track and should get that here. Two trials to get them fit including over 840m last Friday when under a length away fourth. Over the extra distance at Flemington should thrive especially first-up as their record when resuming (8-4-2-0) is excellent.
#5 Shanghai Warrior ($6)
Trainer Hyland is confident in his six-year-old’s ability as they look to secure their first win in two years. Won this race in 2012 but haven’t been first past the post since. A bowed tendon saw them miss over a year of racing, and while they haven’t had a win since returning from that, they have had three nice runs at the track in the All Victorian Sprint Series including a third in the final last time out. Flemington is the right track, handles a Slow course and is Group 1 performed so class is there too.
#10 Sino Eagle ($6)
Mares have a disastrous record in this race but if any can challenge this year it is Peter Moody’s Casino Prince five-year-old. She’s got a nice record at Flemington and was consistent in the autumn including a Group 3 third here over 1400m. Resumed at Caulfield with a big two length win over the mares earning her another Group 3 start on the weekend, Moody looking to see how she goes up against the boys in this company.
