2014 Caulfield Cup Odds – Rising Romance v The Offer

Two very different gallopers are currently sharing top spot in the updated Caulfield Cup 2014 odds following this week’s nominations with New Zealand-trained mare Rising Romance and Gai Waterhouse’s Sydney Cup winner The Offerdoing battle for the punters’ love.

In the newly released Ladbrokes.com.au markets for this year’s $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m), featuring odds on all 221 nominees, Rising Romance and The Offer sit as co-$15 favourites.

Rising Romance (NZ)

  • 4YO Bay Mare
  • D.O.B: 09-Oct-2010
  • By Ekraar (USA) from Post Romance (NZ)
  • Trainer: Ms Donna Logan
  • Owners: Mr N J Carter, Mr B H Carter, Mr M R Powell
  • Career: 10:4-2-1
  • Prizemoney: $921,372
  • Min/Max-Dist-Win: 1400/2400

Rising Romance entered Caulfield Cup calculations during her Sydney autumn campaign in April where she backed up from a Vinery Stud Stakes fourth to Lucia Valentina to win the Australian Oaks over 2400m at Randwick. At home her form includes a second in the NZ Derby as well making her a dual winner over the Caulfield Cup distance as a filly with improvement expected during her four-year-old season.

The Offer (IRE)

  • 6YO Bay Gelding
  • D.O.B: 07-May-2009
  • By Montjeu (IRE) from Valdara (GB)
  • Trainer: Ms Gai Waterhouse
  • Owners: Mr R Mcclure, Mr P C Mcclure, Mt Hallowell Stud, Gurners Bloodstock Co, Fesen Pty Ltd, Mr F Pollicina, Star Stayers One, Star Stayers Two, Mr N J Bertalli, Ms K M Wood, Mr A Konstantatos, Mrs R L Foot, Mr R M Herron, Mr J B Bongiorno, Diamond Family, A R Company, Mrs J J H Stephens, Mr D K M Walpole
  • Career: 17:6-2-3
  • Prizemoney: $1,173,629
  • Min/Max-Dist-Win: 2200/3200

Beats Rising Romance in prizemoney but has won just the one Group 1 when ending their last prep on a high taking out the Sydney Cup over the two miles by an easy four lengths. That gave them three on the trot in Sydney with Waterhouse hoping the Irish import can perform just as strongly when she races them in Melbourne for the first time this season.  Also the early favourite for the 2014 Melbourne Cup back up over 3200m. Ran second in an official trial on July 18 and jockey Tommy Berry is signing them praises.

A trio more Caulfield Cup nominees are then also installed under $20 with:

Kirramosa ($17) – John Sargent-trained Alamosa mare killed her three-year-old season including back-to-back Flemington wins during the Melbourne Cup Carnival taking out the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes – Group 1 Crown Oaks double. Needs to make the step up against the boys as a 4YO now but is well fancied to do so having been back in work since May after an operation to remove bone chips from a fetlock. Runs first-up this Saturday in Sydney’s Missile Stakes (1200m) and will be better going up in distance.

La Amistad ($17) – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Redoute’s Choice mare was on fire during the winter – autumn season with three big wins by a combined nine lengths including a black-type at Randwick over 2400m, only lightly raced with 11 starts so far, only one Group 3 start (2600m at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day when eighth) but highly spruiked for this spring.

Lucia Valentina ($17) – Kris Lees’ Newcastle based Savabeel mare ran third to Rising Romance in the Oaks last start in a great performance after a wide run, before that she was beating home Solicit to win the Vinery Stud Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill, needs to prove herself as a genuine mile-and-a-half horse but lots to like about the Kiwi import who is set to resume on August 23 ahead of the 2014 Turnbull Stakes after which Caulfield Cup claims will be known.

The shortest priced of the record 44 international entries for this year’s Caulfield Cup meanwhile are Japanese duo Admire Rakti ($26) and Bande ($26) followed by recent Goodwood Cup winner Cavalryman ($26) who was 12th to Green Moon in the 2012 Melbourne Cup and Marco Botti‘s Melbourne Cup fifth placegetter from last year Dandino ($26).
