Three horses sit under $4 to win Saturday’s opening Group race of the season in a tight 2014 Missile Stakes betting affair in Sydney.
Running as Royal Randwick Race 6 at 3:35pm, this year’s $175,000 Group 3 McGrath Estate Agents Missile Stakes (1200m) field features nine spring carnival bound gallopers.
It’s a genuine battle for the top spot in the Ladbrokes.com.au Missile Stakes odds too with the current favourite being the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea paying $3.60.
Drawn in gate seven with hoop of the moment Tommy Berry to ride, the Snitzel mare has an outstanding record when fresh having won two of her three first-up runs and placed second in the other.
One of the best fillies getting around in her juvenile season, including a Magic Millions Classic second and Golden Slipper third last year, her three-year-old campaign was also impressive.
Two back in March she was just nosed out of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) win by Steps In Time before a disappointing ninth in the TJ Smith Stakes over this track and distance that she’ll be out to atone for against easier company on Saturday.
Hot on Sweet Idea’s heels in the Missile Stakes betting markets at $3.70 is then the Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane drawn in barrier four with Blake Shinn riding.
Also boasting a strong record when resuming (4-3-1-0), California Dane stallion Rebel Dane hasn’t won since their Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes success in Melbourne last September.
Their last start was a below par seventh to River Lad in Brisbane’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and they come off a third in a Warwick Farm trial from late last month.
Third pick at $4 to win the Missile Stakes and kick off the new season on a high is then Messene.
Drawn on the rails with Sydney premiership winning hoop James McDonald to ride, there looks to be plenty going for this Lonhro six-year-old who has won nine of their 13 starts so far.
Super consistent, the Group 2 Ajax Stakes winner beat Weary home in March before failing to handle a Heavy (9) track at Randwick in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) last time out.
They should be race fit after two Rosehill trials, including one on Monday where they ran second to stablemate Entirely Platinum, and Team Hawkes back them up just five days later in a method that has worked for them many times before.
Also at single figures in the wide open market is then the Chris Waller-trained duo of Chipping Norton champ Boban ($8) back to racing after suffering a bleeding incident in the Queen Elizabeth in the autumn and early market mover Weary ($9.50).
Imported French galloper Weary returns after a stellar autumn that included a Doncaster Mile third and a second in the All Aged at the track in late April.
Just outside of those at $10 is then Group 2 winning Red Ransom mare Thump ($10) before the market opens up to three longer priced hopes that are sure to be better later in their campaigns when getting out over more distance.
