Grant Williams’ flying mare Celebrity Miss is the one to beat in Saturday’s Belmont Newmarket 2014 field as the action of the Belmont Winter Racing Carnival continues in WA.
Ten gallopers are engaged for this year’s $100,000 Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m), running as Race 7 at Belmont Park on the weekend.
The headliner of those accepted and most likely to lead the Ladbrokes.com.au markets on the race is More Than Ready six-year-old Celebrity Miss drawn in gate nine with Chris Parnham to ride.
She gets in with 56kg, a full two kilos more than she carried to victory last start for her dominant win in the Listed HG Bolton Sprint over the same track and distance on July 30.
That took her outstanding 1200m record at Belmont up to five wins and a second from seven attempts that she’ll look to continue this weekend even with the extra kilos.
HG Bolton Sprint runner-up Dominating also backs up in the Belmont Newmarket this weekend.
Neville Parnham’s Ascot-based Snitzel gelding was a length off Celebrity Miss last time out when they met equal in the weights but get the advantage here staying on 54kg with Brad Parnham to ride from barrier five.
Along with Celebrity Miss there is just one other last start winner looking to go back-to-back on Saturday with the David Harrison-trained McScar jumping from the outside barrier (10).
A winner of two of their past three starts the veteran McFlirt grey has their second run as an eight-year-old just a week after their win over 1400m here over Trade Down last weekend.
They’re on the short back-up and go up from 52kg to 54kg but drop back in distance for the Newmarket.
Weights meanwhile are topped by the Ted Martinovich-trained Cavallo Pazzo with 59kg, the Not A Single Doubt seven-year-old looking to improve on their first-up 10th in the HG Bolton.
Also out to atone for an unplaced resuming run in the Bolton is the David Harrison-trained Strada six-year-old Settle Strada who ran dead last despite jumping at single figures to win.
Harrison has also accepted for his HG Bolton fifth placegetter Pininci, the in-form Pins six-year-old having beaten home Smoko the run before to win the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m).
Ross & Clint Price’s Snitzel five-year-old Smoko was odds-on favourite to win the Beaufine Stakes having won all five of their earlier runs but failed to salute for the punters in their first loss.
They trialed at Lark Hill on July 28 for a win after that to freshen up and will be out to win back the love in Saturday’s race jumping from gate eight with regular rider William Pike staying on having jumped off favourite Celebrity Miss.
