Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Early spring plans for Gerald Ryan’s Coolmore Stud Stakes 2014 bound colt Rubick have been interrupted after the stable star contracted a virus.
Speaking to the media on Saturday after his smart sprinter Oakfield Commands won the $85,000 TAB Rewards Handicap (1200m) in Sydney, Ryan confirmed his Encosta De Lago three-year-old Rubick would miss the start of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival due to illness.
While the up-and-comer had shown no real signs of being sick, a temperature test revealed they were suffering from a virus that has hampered the lead-up to their new season return.
“Rubick had a temperature after he was galloped on Tuesday morning so we are just going to pull up stumps for now,” Ryan confirmed.
“There are no symptoms, his blood is fine.”
A winner of their opening two starts this summer gone, Rubick won the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) second-up before tackling elite level company as a shortie in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
On February 22 he raced in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and, despite having held the lead coming round the turn for home, lost face of the final 200m eventually running three lengths away fourth behind Darley-owned filly Earthquake.
Turned out for a spell after that the $460,000 yearling buy was to return in the $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on August 16.
Their return has now been delayed, Rubick suffering the same virus as stablemate Lucky Raquie, but Ryan is confident they will be spot-on for their grand final aim.
“He was going to resume in the San Domenico Stakes but I won’t push him early in the spring carnival,” he said.
“I don’t want to crucify the horse so we will give him a break.”
He’s confirmed the colt’s major target as the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington Racecourse on Victoria Derby Day, November 1, and said Rubick would be right as rain by then.
“We still have time to get him ready for the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington in November,” Ryan said.
