A quality line-up of sprinters is expected for Flemington’s feature race this weekend after a classy list of Aurie’s Star Handicap 2014 nominations were taken on Monday morning.
Originally only 13 hopefuls were entered for the handicap clash, that number up to 15 by the afternoon, with Racing Victoria extending the nominations until 10am on Tuesday for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).
There’s plenty of class already in the race that will attract plenty of betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and has a capacity 16 starters plus four emergencies, one of the top early entries being Text’N Hurley.
The Colin Little-trained Hard Spun mare is in for big things this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with connections eyeing a run in the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25.
She’s won five of her 12 starts to date most recently stepping up in class to win the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on March 21.
There are a handful of really nice horses coming into the Aurie’s Star on the back of some promising form too including the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Sydney raider I’ve Got The Looks.
The Choisir mare won over 1200m at Rosehill two back before a third at Kensington on July 26 in two fillies-and-mares’ only events so is looking for her form to hold when facing an open field for the first time this year.
A couple of last start winners are also nominated with the Peter Moody-trained Sino Eagle who won a mares handicap over this distance at Caulfield first-up on July 26 and Zamorar who won at Flemington on July 19 for their Seymour-based trainer David Bourne.
Others that have run well in the lead-up to the Auries Star include local hope Pillar Of Creation last seen running fifth in the All Victorian Sprint Final and third in that race Shanghai Warrior.
Joe Pride meanwhile has dually nominated his Group 1 winner Tiger Tees for this weekend, The Galaxy winner also entered for Randwick’s Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) in Sydney.
See below for the current Aurie’s Star Handicap 2014 nominations, the final field due out on Wednesday.
