Grant Williams’ race favourite Celebrity Miss saluted for the punters at Belmont Park on Wednesday winning the rescheduled H.G. Bolton Sprint 2014.
This year’s $100,000 Listed H.G. Bolton Sprint (1200m) was washed out last Saturday but ran yesterday mid-week at Belmont.
Heading the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, top fancy was Williams’ More Than Ready mare Celebrity Miss ($3.30) who had two wins at the track and distance this winter.
A half-sister to Group 2 Karrakatta Plate winner Confront, Celebrity Miss improved off a fifth in the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m), relishing the step back up to 1200m to beat home the Neville Parnham-trained Dominating ($4.480) by a length.
The bookies may have picked the winning HG Bolton Sprint quinella, but adding value to the trifecta crossing a distant three and a quarter lengths off Celebrity Miss was the Simon Miller-trained Comfysofa ($31).
It was a strong ride from Perth’s top jockey William Pike in the race to win again on the consistent mare.
Pike rode her to victory two back in a Benchmark 72+ before Brad Parnham jumped aboard for her Beaufine loss.
Celebrity Miss flew from the barriers on Wednesday quickest out and put herself up in front much closer to the pace than owner Bob Peters would have predicted.
She had plenty in the tank however with Pike peeling her up around the leaders at the top of the straight.
Her devastating late burst then put the HG Bolton Sprint result beyond doubt as she drew clear and secured her eighth career win from 17 starts taking her total career earnings to $238,025.
The victory was also the 129th stakes-winner for Vinery Stud’s unfaltering sire More Than Ready.
Williams and Pike rounded out the 2013-14 season on a high also combining earlier in the day to win the opening race, the $20,000 Westspeed Nursery (1200m), with Silverstream ($7) in her debut.
Flashing home late the Al Maher filly was able to defeat Miss Cyclonic ($4.40) by half a length in a race where Simon Miller’s $3.70 favourite Lunar Eclipse could only manage to finish fourth.
Pike had the winner positioned mid-field off the rail before they made their move nearing the home turn to eventually run the second fastest final 600m time of the day with 35.52.
The next major of the Belmont Winter Racing Carnival is on August 23 with the $100,000 Listed Goodwood Sprint (1300m).
