Lloyd Kennewell’s progressive Adelaide filly Thiamandi enjoyed a second successful raid at Caulfield for the month when scoring an upset win in Saturday’s 2014 Bletchingly Stakes.
The rising four-year-old daughter of Street Boss won at Caulfield Racecourse on July 5 against her own type over 1100m before being stepped up in class and distance for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Slickpix Bletchingly Stakes (1200m).
Facing a Group field for the first time and making her 1200m debut, Thiamandi went out as a $17 outsider for the Bletchingly Stakes.
A drop back from 59kg last start to 56kg and a jockey change with Michael Rodd taking over for Joe Bowditch however saw the South Australian filly thrive.
For the second time in as many starts Thiamandi was able to defeat her rivals at Caulfield by two lengths when beating home the Shawn Mathrick-trained Group 1 performed mare Gig ($17).
The juicy priced Bletchingly Stakes trifecta was then finished off by the other Adelaide visitor, Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas’ All Victorian Sprint Final winner Nearest To Pin ($17) who was a further quarter length away in third.
Bletchingly Stakes betting was dominated by odds-on favourite Lord Of The Sky but the Robbie Laing-trained Danerich colt, winner of the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) the run before, could only manage to finish three and a half lengths away from the winning filly in fourth.
Jockey Dwayne Dunn let Lord Of The Sky settle off the pace set by the Mick Price-trained Monash Stakes runner-up Le Bonsir who ran awesome time over the first 800m.
Le Bonsir faded to eventually finish second last in seventh, while Lord Of The Sky didn’t respond to Dunn’s requests over the final 300m.
The pressure was on but the youngster didn’t rise to the challenge putting in doubt their claims for a shot at the $400,000 Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) back at the track on August 30.
“He was very disappointing,” Dunn told the Courier Mail.
“I was happy to straighten up and start to build but they just picked him straight off.”
The turn of foot from the winner meanwhile shocked even Thiamandi’s jockey Rodd who couldn’t believe her final acceleration after she settled third off the two front runners.
“I had to be mindful she needed to run the 1200m out,” Rodd said.
“I rode her to run well and run on but the next thing, she was travelling sweetly behind them and she hadn’t done any work.
“I didn’t think she was going to come out and win a Group 3 race but she just had that soft run and that good acceleration.”
