Bletchingly Stakes 2014 Betting Tips

On Saturday a field of off-season sprinters will face off in Caulfield’s 2014 Bletchingly Stakes, betting tips and selections for the showdown found below.

There are eight in the mix for the $150,000 Group 3 Slickpix Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) this year, the odds-on favourite of which is Lord Of The Sky.

Paying $1.60 the Danerich colt comes off a blistering four and a half length win at the track in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) earlier in the month, an effort they’re tipped to repeat on Saturday.

Lord Of The Sky dominates Bletchingly Stakes betting but three of their rivals can also be had for under $10 to win.

Second pick and market mover in from $7 to $6.50 is the Mick Price-trained Le Bonsir.

They get the rails run on Saturday as they look to improve on their distant second to Lord Of The sky in the Monash.

They’ve had one more run than the favourite in the lead-up however having finished a closer second on July 12 behind Nearest To Pin in the All Victorian Sprint Series Final at Flemington.

Also at single figures are then visiting Adelaide filly Thiamandi ($8.50) and All Victorian Final winner Nearest To Pin ($6.50) who also hails from South Australia.

So is the favourite the one to beat really? And if so, who will finish in the money behind them for the Bletchingly Stakes exotics this year?

#5 Lord Of The Sky ($1.60)

They’re odds-on for a reason and even though the price is crazy short, this is not a standout field and they are the standout. Should get a good run from barrier five, Dwayne Dunn stays on, go up in distance but did it by 4.5 lengths over 100m shorter and trainer Robbie Laing is tipping them for 1400m in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes next month so will need to be winning this to justify that spring target.

#3 Nearest To Pin ($9.50)

Tipping the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Glyas-trained Adelaide raider to add value to Saturday’s Bletchingly Strakes quinella. Have been consistent this time in and their Flemington finals day win was impressive last start. Get a gun run here from barrier two, Nicholas Hall retrains the ride and distance is ideal. Need to handle extra weight here going up from 55.5kg to 58.5kg under WFA but with that barrier and nice lead-up should be close.

#8 Thiamandi ($8.50)

Tipping the form of the South Australian hopes to stand up here with Lloyd Kennewell’s Street Boss filly to handle a rise in class here. She could have run at home in the Lightning Stakes but Kennewell runs here in this over 1200m on the back of her 1100m win at the track last time out. Earned this assignment with her two length effort there and the swap to Michael Rodd in the saddle and 56kg (down from 59kg) both aid her cause.
