2014 Lightning Stakes Tips & Selections

The race may be down one of its drawcard contenders with Thiamandi out, but Saturday’s Lightning Stakes 2014 at Morphettville Racecourse still holds black-type status and is still worth a punt on this weekend.

Originally this year’s $80,000 Listed Programmed Lightning Stakes (1050m) drew 12 final acceptors, however three early scratchings has left nine in the mix.

The most notable withdrawal is the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Street Boss filly Thiamandi, the last start Caulfield winner instead shooting for back-to-back Melbourne wins.

She runs in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) and faces a tough ask coming up against odds-on favourite, last start Monash Stakes winner Lord Of The Sky.

With Thiamandi out of the mix the clear favourite to win at $2.70 is market mover Buddy Bundy.

They’ve drawn the inside alley for Saturday where the Phillip Stokes-trained Al Maher three-year-old shoots for a hat-trick of wins at the track.

An imposing record of four wins and two minor placings over the distance, their gun barrier draw and ideal lead-up form all combine making Buddy Bundy the deserving favourite.

Also at single figures in the Lightning Stakes odds are then the Robert Smerdon-trained Cautious ($3.80) who won over 900m at Sandown two back and Sam Kavanagh’s More Than Ready filly Killcareless ($8) after a black-type win before her likely retirement after the weekend.

So are these three the ones to lock into your Lightning Stakes trifecta tips?

Or is there value to be found further down the markets from a longer priced hope such as Thiamandi’s stablemate Ship’s Captain ($11) or Peter Moody’s Melbourne trained two-year-old Pink Perfection ($10)?

#3 Ship’s Captain ($11)

Going to tip an upset here and have Kennewell’s sole remaining hope as the roughie to win. Bel Esprit gelding comes into the race on the back of some promising form. Won at Balakalva over this distance two back first-up off a four month break then ran Morphettville Parks in a BenchMark 72 finishing second to Buddy Bundy. The weights aren’t in their favour here as they go up and Buddy Bundy goes down, but they’re in top form and ready to strike.

#1 Buddy Bundy ($2.70)

Don’t think there will be much in it and Buddy Bundy is certainly deserving of their spot top of the markets after their two length win here last start. Drop back half a kilo to 58kg, and boast an imposing record (4-2-1-1) over the track and distance. In it to win it, get inside barrier, should be a beauty of a showdown.

#11 Cautious ($3.80)

Weight advantage as a juvenile here is notable as they get in on 52.5kg, 5.5kg better than the favourite. Smerdon’s Lonhro filly won two on the tot earlier this prep including over 1000m at Mornington, come off a second in the mud at Sandown from last Friday, on a short turnaround but drops four kilos and with a Heavy track likely on Saturday will be ready for them.
