Bletchingly Stakes Figuring as Ideal Gig for Mathrick

While unable to break through for a victory at Group level this preparation, Gig has contested a total of three race at the highest level of Australian racing in 2014; finishing mid-field in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in Brisbane most recently.

Having returned to Victoria for third in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 12th, Mathrick told the Herald Sun he believes all signs point towards a return to the winner’s circle for Gig this weekend.

“I haven’t really done anything with her for two weeks and I think she is a 1200m of 1400m horse any way,” Mathrick said.

“We stretched her out to 1600m the other day, but our opinion of her is that she is a 1200m or 1400m horse.”

Contesting a long and busy preparation of 15 races since returning in the Sportingbet Best Tote Plus Handicap (1200m) on November 23rd, Mathrick said he would prefer to be finding the Bletchingly Stakes fresh, but is confident Gig’s experience over the distance will go a long way.

“I wish she was fresher of course but I’ve done absolutely nothing with her since she last raced and she has been just led to off the lead pony and has been to the beach just walked up and down the water,” Mathrick said.

“She is weighted (56.5kgs) to win it and whether or not she can come back from the mile to 1200m is the thing.”

Claiming four wins and 14 minor places from 32 competitive starts, Gig finishing a fighting sixth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 21st in what was her first appearance in a Group 1 feature, and has since claimed sixth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) and third in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) most notably.

Allocated barrier 6, Gig has been confirmed for be partnered by talented jockey Vlad Duric in the 2014 Bletchingly Stakes and is currently available at generous odds on $14 for success with leading online bookie
