A smart field of sprinters is engaged to face off in the Lightning Stakes 2014 at Morphettville Racecourse this weekend including Buddy Bundy who shoots for their third straight win at the track.
Twelve gallopers are in the mix for this year’s $80,000 Listed Programmed Lightning Stakes (1050m), the set weights race for two and three year olds running as the eighth in Adelaide on Saturday.
Drawn in barrier one with Dom Tourneur to ride is the Phillip Stokes-trained Al Maher grey Buddy Bundy.
Super consistent having run top three in all six of their starts since April, Buddy Bundy comes off back-to-back Morphettville wins in Benchmark 72 races this winter.
The most recent of those was over 1000m on July 12 when carrying 58.5kg from barrier two, half a kilo more than their weight allocation from a similarly favourable barrier this weekend.
Stokes has also accepted for outside hope Our Miss Bossy, the Street Boss filly drawn in gate seven with Adrian Patterson to ride as she looks to improve on her sixth over 1400m here a month ago.
Runner-up to Buddy Bundy last start was Lloyd Kennewell’s Bel Esprit gelding Ship’s Captain who is also backing up in the Lightning Stakes field on the weekend.
Winner over this distance at Balaklava two back, Ship’s Captain was beaten just over one and a half lengths in the Tapestry Wines Handicap last start and will be out to turn the tables on Saturday.
Buddy Bundy meanwhile faces a host of other last start winners including Kennewell’s other runner Thiamandi.
Suffering an early blow with the outside barrier 12 draw, Thiamandi is another Street Boss filly and she has won both her lead-up starts.
The first was in the wet on a Heavy (9) here at Morphettville on June 28 before heading to Caulfield last start on July 5.
In Melbourne Thiamandi scored a nice two length victory in The Cove Hotel Handicap against her own kind carrying 59kg, the drop back to 56kg on Saturday to work in her favour this weekend then.
Also coming off a win are the lightly-raced David Jolly-trained Herenoa (barrier three) who won on debut last start back in April and Ken Sweeney’s Cash Is Coming (barrier two).
Niello filly Cash Is Coming has won two of their past three starts, jockey Ronnie Steward staying on here after the pair defeated Buddy Bundy by a nose on June 7 over this track and distance last start.
Other notable hopes then include the Richard Jolly-trained Husson Lightning gelding Pistolier down in distance after two 1200m runs at the track including a win at the start of the month, in-form Lonhro filly Cautious for Robert Smerdon coming via nice form in Melbourne and the Peter Moody-trained fellow Victorian visitor Pink Perfection.
