Melbourne Cup Shaping as Target for Who Shot Thebarman

While yet to confirm a path through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival for the rising six-year-old trainer Chris Waller is confident of a successful campaign for Kiwi import Who Shot Thebarman, which is likely to include a tilt at the Melbourne Cup on November 4th.

A standout performer over the spring of 2013 and autumn of 2014, Who Shot Thebarman claimed four wins and two seconds places from eight competitive starts, including a comfortable victory in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) on March 5th.

While unable to handle the late pace and ninth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) most recently on April 19th, Waller told AAP he believes the form and proven ability over two miles of the Yamanin Vital gelding points towards a legitimate claim on the 2014 Melbourne Cup.

“He is a typical New Zealand stayer and is a lightly framed horse,” Waller said.

“He has put on weight and is a stayer with some substance.

“He went back to New Zealand after the Sydney Cup for a spell and came to us a few weeks ago and has settled in well.

“I’m not sure where he will start off. It depends where he sits in the scale of things.

“His Auckland Cup win shows how strong he is at 3200 metres.”

Winning each of his first two competitive race starts over the autumn of 2013, Who Shot Thebarman more than stamped his claims as one to watch over major staying events through the 2014 spring when finishing second in the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) and claiming back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Avondale Gold Cup (2400m) and Auckland Cup prior to his unsuccessful tilt at the Sydney Cup.

Having worked well since returning to Waller’s Caulfield stables, Who Shot Thebarman is currently offered at generous odds of $41 for success in the 2014 Melbourne Cup; sharing the sixth line of betting with 13 possible rivals for the first Tuesday of November’s feature.
