Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The bookies and punters are having a hard time separating the top two chances for tomorrow’s Winter Stakes 2014 at Rosehill Gardens with Scream Machine and Generalife now sharing favouritism at the top of the markets.
When betting on this year’s $100,000 Listed Myer Fashion Winter Stakes (1400m) opened earlier in the week the John O’Shea-trained Generalife was narrow $3.40 favourite.
They’ve since been well supported to make it three straight wins at Rosehill and are into $3.30 in the Winter Stakes odds.
Going up from 54kg to 56.5kg the Lonhro four-year-old earned their increased weight after taking out the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) here on July 5 beating many of the same rivals they face this weekend.
Of course their biggest rival is Scream Machine who has firmed even more notably in from $3.50 to $3.30.
The Jason Coyle-trained Excites five-year-old, like Generalife, is after a hat-trick of Rosehill wins and was last seen carrying 56.5kg to victory over 1500m here on June 28.
They also are going up in the weights to 58.5kg and also have the outside barrier 10 draw to overcome.
Those are things Coyle believes they can prove better than however with Scream Machine relishing his easier off season assignments after taking on a Group 1 field in Brisbane this winter as well as some of the best in the business last spring including Boban when ninth in the Epsom Handicap.
“He’s come back in grade tenfold from where he was racing, which included horses like Boban,” Coyle told The Daily Telegraph.
“He’s found the right sort of fields, and he’s been running up to what he was doing in the better grades.
“There’s the Winter Challenge in a few weeks after Saturday, and depending on how he pulls up, he could push on to the Warwick Stakes (on August 23) or go to the paddock.”
The last of the single figure chances in the latest Winter Stakes odds at $7.50 is then Romantic Moon.
The James & Bart Cummings-trained More Than Ready filly has the rails run for her class rise here coming off a smart win in a fillies-and-mares’ BenchMark 83 at the track three weeks ago.
She drops from 57.5kg there to the 54kg minimum on Saturday though and has raced in much better company.
Formerly prepared by O’Shea she has Group 1 experience from last year’s Golden Slipper and also ran in a host of Group 2 races last spring including a fifth to Guelph in the Tea Rose Stakes.
Following the top three are then the likes of the Chris Waller-trained top weight Tougher Than Ever ($12), their stable mate Hidden Kisses ($13) and Team Cummings’ other runner The Peak ($13).
