Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A notable performer over two-year-old events through the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival, trainer Gary Nickson has revealed exciting filly Alpha Miss will be set for the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse on October 4th.
Claiming back-to-back victories in her two debut starts in the spring of 2013, including the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) first-up, Alpha Miss returned to racing in similarly impressive form in 2014, finishing fourth in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on February 15th before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on March 8th.
Placing an impressive third to Earthquake and Mossfun in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Lucky Owners filly progressed to the featured Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th but was unable to handle the late pace; fading to finish 14th.
Understandably thrilled with Alpha Miss’s campaign through autumn, Nickson said he is confident of a similarly successful season through the 2014 spring and believes that while yet to figure at 1600 metres competitively, the rising three-year-old will more than hold her own in the Group 1 Flight Stakes.
“Alpha Miss gave me the best Sydney autumn ever this year and she was my first starter in the Golden Slipper Stakes,” Nickson told Sydney Racing.
“Jason (Collett, jockey) had Alpha Miss tracking the favourite Earthquake rounding the home turn and ahead of Mossfun the eventual winner, but she found nothing in the straight.
“She produced a fighting finish in winning the Lohnro and later a close third to our two top juveniles Earthquake and Mossfun in the Reisling Stakes.
“I am now aiming for the Flight Stakes over 1600m as she has shown me that she will race further than 1200m.
“Her style of racing and pedigree has shown me that she is capable of finishing off a true 1600m at Randwick.”
With betting markets for the 2014 Flight Stakes yet to open, Alpha Miss is currently available at generous odds of $41 for success in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) later in October with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
