10 Horse Winter Stakes 2014 Field Released

Just 10 gallopers will face off in the Sydney feature at Rosehill Gardens this weekend with a small but classy field engaged for the 2014 Winter Stakes.

Due to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:27pm, this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Myer Fashion Winter Stakes (1400m) is shaping up as a battle of the track specialists.

Two promising types come off successive Rosehill wins and are after the hat-trick with the Jason Coyle-trained Scream Machine coming up against John O’Shea’s last start Civic Stakes winner Generalife.

With 58.5kg Scream Machine is the second heaviest weighted hopeful trailing only the Chris Waller-trained Tromso on 59kg.

The Excites gelding has also suffered an early blow drawing wide with the outside barrier while their biggest threat, Generalife will jump from the sixth alley carrying 56.5kg.

A winner over the track and distance two back, five-year-old Scream Machine was last seen winning the Natski Handicap (1500m) here on June 28 carrying 56.5kg so must handle a notable weight rise plus the barrier but does get to keep gun hoop Tye Angland for the challenge.

Generalife then looks the one to beat with Kerrin McEvoy to ride the Darley-owned improver.

A rising five-year-old son of Lonhro, they were last seen winning the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) on July 5 over Bennetta with apprentice Sam Clipperton on while McEvoy served a suspension.

The senior rider is back for the weekend however, Generalife also going up from their last start weight of 54kg.

Clipperton has failed to pick up another ride in the Sydney black-type this weekend after originally hoping to secure a mount in one of the season’s last feature stakes races.

Along with the top weight Tromso, Sydney’s leading trainer Waller has also accepted for three of their stable mates as he looks to continue another stellar 12 months training winners.

A two time winner over the track and distance, Lonhro seven-year-old Tromso comes off a distant eighth to Generalife in the Civic Stakes which is also the race that has produced Waller’s other three Winter Stakes hopes.

The best of the pack was Coup Ay Tee who ran sixth followed by Hidden Kisses (7th) and Tougher Than Ever (9th).

Also with multiple hopes in the Winter Stakes field this year is the James & Bart Cummings training team with two chances for an upset.

They will saddle-up apprentice Taylor Marshall’s ride The Peak from barrier five and then last start winner Romantic Moon from the inside alley with Christian Reith to ride.

Pendragon gelding The Peak is another Civic Stakes graduate having run five lengths away fifth when ridden by Jay Ford, Marshall aboard the start before when they finished sixth to Oakfield Commands in the Winter Dash (1200m) at Randwick.

More Than Ready filly Romantic Moon meanwhile comes off three top runs at the track and is on the improve.

She ran third over 1400m on May 31 behind Mamwaazel and then third again this time to Dowdstown Charlie over 1500m on June 14.

Romantic Moon carried big weights for both of those runs with 59kig and 58kg respectively before she had 57.5kg on her back when Blake Shinn guided her to a three quarter length victory over the 1500m here on June 28 in a fillies-and-mares- BenchMark 83.

Going up in class for Saturday, Romantic Moon will be aided by an advantageous drop back to the 54kg minimum.

Also in the mix is last year’s Civic Stakes winner Under The Sun who enjoyed a three and a half length romp in the race 12 months ago.

They were in better form last winter however backing up off a Randwick win and a Civic Stakes second.

This year the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding has had just the one run when second last behind Big Money in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton on July 9 carrying 58kg, two kilos more than their Winter Stakes weight for the weekend.

Rounding out the field in barrier nine for Newcastle trainer Paul Perry is then Wouldn’t It Be Nice coming off a fourth over 1300m at Randwick last Saturday behind Burbero.
