Pininci Scores Upset Beaufine Stakes 2014 Win

David Harrison’s consistent galloper Pininci scored the upset of the day at Belmont Park on Saturday when the double figure roughie defeated odds-on favourite Smoko in the 2014 Beaufine Stakes.

Ross & Clint Price’s Snitzel four-year-old Smoko jumped $1.60 to win this year’s $100,000 Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) after winning their opening five career starts.

The sprint star however suffered their first loss when jockey Patrick Carbery rode $41 outsider Pininci to a one length victory over William Pike’s mount that lost few admirers after getting caught three-wide.

In third finishing off the Beaufine Stakes trifecta another half length away was then the longest priced hope in the race, Recode ($51).

Now a winner of six of their 25 career starts, Pins five-year-old Pininci came off a close third over the same track and distance behind Blacksmith in a Benchmark 72+ two weeks before.

They also enjoyed a win before that over the 1000m at Belmont and so boast a nice record at the course.

The 1000m specialist was blocked for a run on straightening in their June 28 lead-up but had a clearer run on Saturday in the Beaufine where they also appreciated a drop back from 56kg to the 54kg minimum.

Harrison, who also combined with jockey Carbery last year for the Beaufine Stakes win with Settle Strada, is now planning more black-type racing for Pininci who is likely to garget the $100,000 HG Bolton Sprint (1200m) on July 26 followed by the $100,000 Belmont Newmarket (1200m) on August 9.

If all goes well they will then be sent on a Perth Summer Racing Carnival campaign at Ascot including a run in the $100,000 Listed Summer Scorcher (1000m) at WA’s premier track on New Year’s Day.

“He’s always been considered a 1000-metre horse,” Harrison told The West Australian on Saturday.

“But he finished strongly today and I think he’s ready to win over 1200 metres.

“After the Belmont Newmarket, his long-term aim will be the Summer Scorcher.”

The action of the Belmont Winter Racing Carnival continues this Saturday, July 19, with the stayers facing off in the $100,000 Listed Belmont Classic (2200m).
