Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Cranbourne horseman Michael Kent is looking at Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival options including the Toorak Handicap 2014 for his up-and-coming colt Pyrrolic following their Flemington Finals Day win on the weekend.
The Teofilo colt posted their second win at start number four on Saturday taking out the last black-type on the Melbourne race card, the $120,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Series Final (1200m).
In their first run in five months, and their returning race after a throat operation, Pyrrolic ($11) caught the eye when defeating the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Hard Stride ($9.50), who posted their third second place finish on the trot, by half a length in the three-year-olds’ sprint.
Running a close third just a long neck away to finish off the AR Creswick Final trifecta was then the Robert Smerdon-trained Under The Louvre ($8) before the $5.50 favourite Miss Promiscuity ran a distant fourth nearly four lengths off the winner.
Winning jockey Brad Rawiller had Pyrrolic settled off the speed before taking them up on the inside to lead over the final 50m and hang on for the win.
“This horse showed what he’s capable of and he’s only going to be improved by today’s performance,” Rawiller, who also rode Refulgent to victory in Saturday’s $120,000 TVN/Slickpix Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m), said post-win.
Having originally earmarked Pyrrolic as a Caulfield Guineas type last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, Kent hopes to atone with a Group 1 run this coming season.
A three length winner on debut at Sandown-Lakeside back in May last year, Pyrrolic spent the next nine months sidelined with throat issues.
They had a two run autumn campaign this February but were unplaced in both starts including their seventh to Thunder Fantasy when blocked for a run in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
After convincing owners to operate on their problematic throat after their disappointing last prep, Kent is now confident the youngster will continue to improve as they get up over more distance.
“I wanted to aim him at the Caulfield Guineas, I thought he was a really good horse,” Kent told Racing Victoria.
“He sort of started having trouble with his larynx over the spring and we tried for the owners to get him back to the races but he’s had tie-back operation now and all is well.”
Saturday then was a nice restart for the rising four-year-old who could be aimed at the $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse on Caulfield Guineas Day, October 11, next time in.
“I think he’s up to spring quality as a mile (1600m) or ten furlong (2000m) horse so I’ll probably try and give him another run and then back off him for the spring,” Kent confirmed.
“He’s won a Listed race first up over six furlongs (1200m) which is not his best trip and I know it mightn’t have been a great race but I’ve got a lot of time for him.
“There’s still a long way to go but if he proves he’s up that level then a race like the Toorak Handicap could be an option.”
