There are now 14 in the mix for this year’s $120,000 Listed Banjo Paterson Series Final (2600m) after the early scratching of #12 Get Out Of Town.

Of the remaining hopes two stayers are currently installed as the equal $4.40 favourites with Mulaqen and Marksmanship drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers 14 (into 13) and two respectively.

Chris Waller’s European import Mulaqen was scratched from Thursday’s Grafton Cup in favour of a run here, the six-year-old coming off a close third behind their stable mates Secessio and Hoylonny in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill a fortnight ago.

Marksmanship meanwhile has won their past two on the trot, Ciaron Maher’s Galileo stallion most recently defeating Gotta Take Care on a Slow (7) track at Caulfield in the Race-Tech Australia Handicap (2000m) with 54kg – half a kilo less than their reasonable weight for the weekend.

Also at single figures in the Banjo Paterson Series Final odds are then Waller’s High Chaparral seven-year-old Sacred Flyer ($5) out to improve on their sixth to Crafty Cruiser in Heat 5 of the series when suffering respiratory issues and third in that race Zuma Roc ($6).

So will the winner come from one of these single figure fancies?

Or is there an upset Banjo Paterson Series Final result on the cards from the likes of Picture Editor ($17) or Crafty Cruiser ($12)?

#7 Marksmanship ($4.40)

They’re on the short seven day turnaround but are firing on all cylinders and this is doesn’t look out of their reach. Inside draw (2) so will need to stay out of trouble early but the Irish-bred six-year-old is on the improve. Also up in distance from 2000m to the 2600m but is bred to stay so if they handle the metres this lightly raced import can make an impact especially with the light weight.

#4 Sacred Flyer ($5)

While the money is on their stable mate Mulaqen, we’re tipping improvement from another Waller-trained hope with this rising eight-year-old set for a big run. Distance looks ideal for the veteran who ran second on a Slow (6) Flemington track over 2500m a month ago before their last start failure when fifth to Crafty Cruiser. Had breathing problems that day however and have been treated so can do a better job over the 2600m at the same track with a good weight 55.5kg and Chris Symons staying on for the ride.

#9 Picture Editor ($17)

Think Glen Boss is has a few really nice rides on the card including this roughie chance from the local stables of Michael Moroney. The Dansili six-year-old improved on an eighth to Sacred Flyer here two back with a 2500m win in the wet against easier company in Adelaide. Confidence back, up in class but in form and ready to go.
