Another Excellantes Ride for Brown in 2014 Ascot Handicap – Results

Top Brisbane hoop Damian Browne and rising seven-year-old Excellantes continued a nice record together combining to win the 2014 Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm Racecourse over the weekend.

The duo enjoyed their eight win from 12 rides together when Browne guided the Robert Heathcote-trained Falvelon gelding to victory in Saturday’s $80,000 Listed PMP Limited Ascot Handicap (1200m).

Co-owned by Heathcote’s wife Vicki, Excellantes notched their 10th career win in the sprint showdown to take their winnings to over $628,000.

A $105,000 purchase from the Magic Millions Gold Coast QTIS 600 Yearling Sales back in 2009, Excellantes has been in top form this time in including two stakes wins.

On Saturday they had three quarters of a length to spare over the Donald Baker-trained Mr Favulous ($12) in the Ascot Handicap where they carried the 59kg top weight to victory as a $7 shot.

In third was then Pat Duff’s honest grey Steel Zip ($16) a distant four lengths off the winner to add value to the Ascot Handicap trifecta.

After a bleeding episode nearly ended their career last season, Excellantes has given connections a super latest Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival prep including their Listed Hinkler Handicap (12000m) victory bay in April where Browne was also aboard.

“Obviously the horse and I work well together,” Browne told The Courier Mail.

Heathcote, whose five year Brisbane trainer’s premiership reign will come to an end this month with Tony Gollan set to snare the honors this for the 2013-14 season, now plans to spell the triple stakes winner and set for similar class Listed and Group 3 races next time in.

“We thought it might have been the end of the road for him last year,” Heathcote said.

“He bled and then came back and only had the one run and we had to turn him out again.

“But he’s come back again and won the Hinkler and now the Ascot this preparation.

“He’s been a fantastic horse. He’s a good Listed, Group 3 type horse.

“I might pull up stumps now and send him to the paddock on a high.”
