Adam Durrant’s Belmont Guineas winning filly Tick Tick Bloom has opened odds-on favourite to secure another black-type, and her fourth straight win, when she takes on her own kind in Saturday’s Belmont Oaks 2014.
Running as Race 6 at 3:15pm (local time), this year’s $100,000 Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m) features a field of 13 three-year-old fillies.
Of those one is dominating the Belmont Oaks odds at a short $1.65 and firming, Viscount filly Tick Tick Bloom the one to beat in gate eight with William Pike aboard.
She’s won four of her past five starts including her past three on the trot, and stepped up to stakes company last time out on June 21 here at Belmont Park.
There she beat home a better tried rival in Midnight Shimmer by half a length to win the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) and earn clear favouritism for the Oaks as she goes up in distance this weekend.
There are then four other single figure chances in the latest Belmont Oaks betting markets to score an upset on Saturday including the $6.50 second pick, Belmont Guineas runner-up Midnight Shimmer.
Grant Williams’ daughter of Blackfriars has plenty of black-type experience including her fourth behind Balmont Girl in the Group 3 W.A. Oaks (2400m) at Ascot back in March.
She’s proven over this distance and beyond, and was close behind Tick Tick Bloom when the duo first faced off last start over the mile.
Midnight Shimmer is in barrier six on Saturday with Glenn Smith retaining the ride and if the shortie in the markets doesn’t see out the distance, she’ll be there ready to pounce.
Next best in betting at $8 is the nicely drawn Dabang in barrier three with Brad Parnham aboard.
Shane Quilty’s He’s A Decoy filly comes off improving form, having finished second here a month back behind Trade Down over 1400m before her Belmont Guineas fourth when beaten three quarters of a length.
She’s been right up over 2200m but ran dead last to the subsequent WA Oaks winner in mid-March, an effort she’ll be out to improve on here.
The two others under $10 are then Williams’ Husson filly Star Of Husson (barrier nine) who won over 2100m here in May and will be better than her ninth in the Guineas over too short a distance, and the Cliff Smith-trained I’m Feeling Lucky (barrier 13) up in class here – both paying $9.
