Tromso Heads 2014 Civic Stakes Field

Chris Waller’s rising eight-year-old Tromso heads a five-horse assault their Sydney Premiership winning trainer launches on the Civic Stakes 2014 field at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.

Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) attracted a final field of 11 middle distance sprinters, five of which come from the local Waller stables.

Leading his lofty contingent in barrier six is Lonhro seven-year-old Tromso who carries the 59kg top weight in Rosehill Race 6 at 3:15pm (local).

The veteran is due to be ridden by Josh Parr and comes off a brave fourth behind Scream Machine in the Natski Handicap (1500m) when beaten just three quarters of a length at the track last Saturday.

They drop back in distance this weekend and, while on the seven day back-up, look a top chance having won back-to-back Rosehill races in May over 1350m and 1400m respectively.

Waller also prepares the 58kg second heaviest weighted Civic Stakes hope in Coup Ay Tee drawn wide in gate 10 with Jason Collett in the saddle.

The Danske six-year-old has been well out of form lately however and will need to improve to feature here.

Stablemate Tougher Than Ever then follows in the Civic Stakes weights with 56kg.

Tim Clark rides the General Nediym four-year-old who also comes off a fourth behind Natski Handicap winner Scream Machine from June 14.

Waller’s two other hopes are then on the 54kg minimum for Saturday with the resuming French import He’s Your Man (barrier nine) last seen running last in the Mornington Cup (2400m) on February 12 and Hidden Dragon mare Hidden Kisses (barrier 11).

Coming off a first-up fourth in the Winter Dash over 1200m at Randwick from two weeks back, Hidden Kisses is a Group 3 winner from last winter having beaten her ATC Oaks winning stablemate Royal Descent in the Toy Show Quality (1300m) in August.

She also ran third in a Group 3 over 1200m at Randwick in October and is tipped for another good run this weekend.

Outside of Waller’s horses one of the other most notable Civic Stakes runner this year is the Grahame Begg-trained Bennetta in gate seven.

The General Nediym mare, sixth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) back in April, comes off two good Group performances this season.

Two back she was third, beaten just half a length by Sacred Star, in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm.

She returned to the track then on June 21 and was far from disgraced when 1.7 lengths off Ramornie Handicap-bound Big Money in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m).

Also in the mix are two last start winners with the John O’Shea-trained Generalife in barrier three with apprentice Sam Clipperton riding and the Gerald Ryan-trained Oakfield Commands.

Lonhro four-year-old Generalife has won two of their past three starts and comes off a victory at this track and distance from June 14 in a Benchmark 85 where they carried 58kg, four kilos more than their allocation for Saturday.

Oakfield Commands was the one and a quarter length winner over Zaratone then at Randwick a fortnight ago in the Winter Dash.

Ryan has also accepted for his six-year-old Commands mare Capital Commander in barrier two with Kathy O’Hara in the saddle.

Rounding out the field with the rails draw is then the James & Bart Cummings-trained The Peak, sixth in the Winter Dash last time out.
