Brayroan Backs Up in Queensland Cup 2014 Field

The final field for Saturday’s 2014 Queensland Cup at Eagle Farm is now out with last Saturday’s Caloundra Cup winner Brayroan to back-up and shoot for the double.

Barry Mitchell’s locally-trained Zabeel seven-year-old is one of a bumper 16 acceptors make up the field for the $150,000 Listed bmag Queensland Cup (3200m) this year.

Running as Eagle Farm Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEST) the two mile cup clash is shaping up as a beauty.

Brayroan improved on a disappointing 10th in the Ipswich Cup two back to score an upset over Brave Ali in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast last weekend and is on the seven day turnaround going into the Queensland Cup.

They carried 54kg with Chris Munce in the saddle last weekend but must handle more weight (55.5kg) with Munce staying on.

Saturday will be Brayroan’s second shot at the distance having run fourth to Caravan Rolls On in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) last November when prepared by former trainer Anthony Cummings.

The Queensland Cup weights meanwhile are led by Shaune Ritchie’s New Zealand visitor Military Move with 58kg.

Damian Browne rides the Volksraad seven-year-old who has been racing down under since the start of May on the back of a Group 2 Awapuni Cup (2000m) second back home in March.

They won the Toowoomba Cup over 2150m at the start of last month but were beaten four lengths when second last (11th) behind The Inventor in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) last start on June 21 after getting caught wide.

Tattersall’s Cup winner The Inventor also runs in the Queensland Cup on Saturday, Bevan Laming’s in-form Danasinga five-year-old out wide in barrier 14 with flying apprentice hoop Tegan Harrison in the saddle.

Shooting for their third on the trot the galloper had 54kg in the Tatt’s Cup, just half a kilo less than the weight they’ll carry looking to make it a hat trick on the weekend having been set for this race all Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Also coming off a win are the John Thompson-trained Queensland Derby 10th placed three-year-old Pop ‘N’ Scotch who took out a 2200m Class 2 at the Gold Coast on June 22 and unknown Beaudesert visitor Back To Abilene.

One of the most exciting additions to the Queensland Cup field this year meanwhile is the Sam Kavanagh-trained import Astro Avalanche.

Drawn on the rails where they’ll have to work to stay out of trouble in the big field, the Sydney-based Galileo gelding exploded in the Stayers Cup over the distance on June 7 at Randwick when a close second to Destiny’s Kiss.

It was a brave effort to hang on after jockey Taylor Marshall, the apprentice replaced by Ryan Wiggins on Saturday, took them out to lead by over 150m during the race.

With form over the distance, the ability to stay all day and an explosive turn of foot they’ll add some enthusiasm to the race for sure.

Other notable Queensland Cup acceptors this winter include the now Tony Newing-trained Chris Waller transfer Wazn coming off a fourth in both the McKell Cup and Stayers Cup, the in-form Darren Bell-trained four-year-old Eight’s A Party and Iggi Pop.

The complete Queensland Cup 2014 field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed in the table below.
