Revealing a career-chance to jumps racing is likely on the cards, trainer Sam Kavanagh has confirmed former Irish stayer Astro Avalanche will be offered at least one more opportunity to shine on the flat when lining up for the Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse.
Putting on an impressive display at Royal Randwick last time out, Astro Avalanche pulled a gap of close to 100 metres over his rivals in the Stayers Cup (3200m) on June 7th, eventually run down by in-form runner Destiny’s Kiss and beaten by half a length.
Having contested just eleven competitive race starts since first debuting for leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien in 2011, Kavanagh said he is confident of a polished performance from the b gelding in his maiden appearance north of the border this weekend.
“He recovered from the Randwick race really well,” Kavanagh told AAP.
“The four weeks between runs should be no problem. He is obviously a stayer but has taken a while to learn what it’s about here.”
A standout performer over his first maiden racing preparation which delivered three impressive victories from just four race starts, Astro Avalanche finished eighth in his maiden Australian appearance; the Channel 7 Handicap (2000m) at South Australia’s Morphettville Racecourse in autumn 2013.
Finishing ninth amongst classy competition in the Harvey Norman 3.y.o+ (1500m) in his only start through spring, the gelding out of Lady Lahar was unable to match the late pace and sixth in the RAAF 3.y.o+ (2200m) first-up on April 25th, and while unlucky to be blocked for a run in the Listed W.J. McKell Cup (2400m) on My 24th, undoubtedly recorded his best result since joining Kavanagh’s operation in the Stayers Cup most recently.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Queensland Cup is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
