Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday at Eagle Farm Racecourse the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival action continues with two Black Type features including the Ascot Handicap 2014.
A total of 16 sprinters make up the nominations for this year’s $80,000 Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) which has attracted both local and interstate talent.
The top rated of the runners is the Robert Heathcote-trained Excellantes, winner of the Hinkler Handicap at this track and distance back in April.
The Falvelon six-year-old is out to improve on their last start seventh when beaten three and a half lengths by Big Money in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) on June 21.
The best of the WJ Healy runners nominated for the Ascot Handicap meanwhile is the Kelso Wood-trained Seeking More who ran third beaten under half a length.
The Sequalo four-year-old has been on the improve all preparation and has a top record at Eagle Farm (8-2-2-1), with the form to finish top three again if accepted on Saturday.
Other Ascot Handicap nominees that ran in the WJ Healy are Jason McLachlan’s Sunshine Coast galloper Facile Tigre (5th) and the John Thompson-trained Metallurgical (6th).
Redoute’s Choice seven-year-old Metallurgical has a string of good winter runs behind them too including a Bribie Handicap second, and fourth in both the Chief De Beers and Lighting Handicap this campaign.
Also with good stakes form this season is the Pat Duff-trained Steel Zip, beaten only 1.5 lengths when sixth in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) in May, who was last seen running fifth to Alma’s Fury in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday.
Other notable hopes then include last start Ipswich winning mare La Tikka Rosa, Stuart Kendrick’s Kheleyf filly Radiant Angel who won at the track on June 25 and Rare Ruby who is first-up here.
Rare Ruby, prepared at Deagon by Michael Lakey, won three on the trot last season including over this track and distance in early November but hasn’t raced since.
Sydney’s Sam Kavanagh also has a runner here with four-year-old Dubawi mare Lady Of Harrods.
She comes off a third over 1100m at Rosehill from June 14 and joins her stable mate, Stayers Cup runner-up Astro Avalanche in Brisbane on Saturday as they contest the $150,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m).
See below for the full Ascot Handicap 2014 nominations and stay tuned for Wednesday’s final field announcement.
