He’s already secured yet another trainers’ premiership title but Chris Waller isn’t slowing down anytime soon having nominated for five horses in Sydney’s sole Black Type this Saturday, the Civic Stakes 2014.
A total of 12 gallopers make up the early entries for this year’s $100,000 Listed Civic Stakes (1350m), nominations extended by Racing NSW until 11:00am on Tuesday.
Nearly half the original nominees though come from Waller’s star stables including the top-rated of the bunch, Tromso.
The seven-year-old Lonhro gelding won back-to-back races in May before improving on a 10th when out-weighted (60kg) on a Slow (6) track at Rosehill on June 14.
They improved last Saturday however over the same track with the same weight but on a Good (3) course to run fourth, beaten under a length by Scream Machine in the $85,000 Natski Handicap (1500m).
Waller’s other four Civic Stakes hopes are then Coup Ay Tee, European import He’s Your Man to make their Sydney debut if accepted, Hidden Kisses coming off a first-up fourth in the Winter Dash from June 21 and internationally performed Tougher Than Ever.
There are then two last start winners nominated for the Civic Stakes this weekend with the John O’Shea-trained Generalife and Oakfield Commands for Gerald Ryan.
Progressive Lonhro four-year-old Generalife has won two of their past three starts and will be up in class this weekend after a narrow victory in a Benchmark 85 over 1350m at the track on June 14.
Oakfield Commands meanwhile took out the $85,000 Winter Dash (1200m) off a six week freshen-up at Randwick two weeks ago on Saturday beating home Zaratone (2nd) and Testarhythm (3rd).
Two other notable Civic Stakes hopes are then fellow four-year-old mares Bennetta and Breakfast In Bed.
Grahame Begg’s daughter of General Nediym Bennetta ran third in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) two back and then fourth in the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane at her two most recent runs.
The David Vandyke-trained Hussonet mare Breakfast In Bed meanwhile also had a good Queensland run last time out when third behind Jazz Song in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) on Ipswich Cup Day.
See below for the latest Civic Stakes 2014 nominations, final acceptances and the barrier draw out on Wednesday morning.
