Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Shane Quilty’s improving mare Fancy Feet enjoyed her breakthrough Black Type win over the weekend taking out the Strickland Stakes 2014 at Belmont Park Racecourse.
The Fath four-year-old handled a rise in class without issue, relishing a drop back in distance to win this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) under weight-for-age conditions over the boys.
Ridden by Brad Parnham Fancy Feet ($12) had three quarters of a length to spare over the Adam Durrant-trained Ranger ($2.50) as she defeated the favourite and scored an upset result in the WA feature.
In third half a length further away again to round out the Strickland Stakes trifecta was then Neville Parnham’s veteran Pentire seven-year-old Bridgestone ($13).
Fancy Feet has now won six of her 22 career starts, her earnings up over $222,000 in a nice result good for connections at Loloma Farms.
She was settled in fourth after jumping in the Strickland and put in a brave finish to hold off the challengers with her tough effort.
The mare was coming off a close second over 2200m at the track behind Operational in a Benchmark 78, winner of that race crossing two and a quarter lengths away fourth on Saturday in the Strickland.
Quilty now plans to bring Fancy Feet, who could have one more run this campaign, to Ascot Racecourse this coming Perth Summer Racing Carnival for a shot at more Group wins.
She’ll be aimed at both the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) on November 22 and the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) a fortnight later improving over more distance according to her trainer.
“She’ll have a maximum of one more race before taking a break,” Quilty told The West Australian.
“Fancy Feet is still maturing and will be even better next time in.
“The mare should be at her best between 1600 and 2000 metres.
“I’ll enter her for the Railway Stakes and Kingston Town Classic.”

The next feature race of the Belmont Winter Carnival takes place back at the track this weekend with the three-year-old fillies facing off in the $100,000 Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m).
Fancy Feet’s half-sister Dabang is set for a 2014 Belmont Oaks bid, the He’s A Decoy filly having won one of her six starts to date.
She was far from disgraced second-up on June 21 however when stepped up in class to run fourth, beaten under a length by Tick Tick Bloom in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m).
“She was racing only second-up in the Guineas,” Quilty said.
“Dabang has since improved and will be suited by an extra 400m.”
