2014 Winter Cup Betting Tips

Numbers are dwindling for the Winter Cup 2014 field at Rosehill Racecourse this weekend with only eight gallopers left in the mix for the handicap clash.

Destiny's Kiss

Destiny's Kiss is the Races.com.au tip to win the Winter Cup 2014 in Sydney on Saturday. Photo: Steve Hart.

Originally there were 10 final acceptors for this year’s $100,000 Listed Perfection Fresh Winter Cup (2400m), set to jump as Rosehill Race 5 at 2:40pm on Saturday.

That number has been cut by two however with trainer Gerald Ryan opting to run Ironstein in Queensland’s Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) and Wazn also coming out of the race.

Hot favourite of the remaining runners at $2.80 in the latest Winter Cup odds is then the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Power.

They carry the 59kg top weight but come off some excellent lead-up form, most recently winning the Stayers Cup at Randwick over the two miles on June 7.

Power Of Destiny five-year-old Destiny’s Kiss is back in distance here then, but was also competitive over the mile and a half two back when second to runaway winner La Amistad in the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m).

After the favourite it’s a wide open Winter Cup betting market then with five of the other seven runners also under double figures.

The next best in betting though are the two of Chris Waller’s quartet of runners with Mulaqen ($4.60) and Secessio ($5) drawn in barriers four and three respectively.

So is Destiny’s Kiss the one to beat? Or is there an upset Winter Cup result on the card from a longer priced hope such as Waller’s market mover Permit ($8.50) or former Group 1 winner Zabeelionaire ($9)?

#1 Destiny’s Kiss ($2.80)

Carry the 59kg top weight but are still going to be hard to hold out after their two mile (3200m) win with the same weight at Randwick last time out. They are down in distance but should still be sharp enough, good form over this distance too (4-1-1-1). Have won over this track and distance previously, are in good form, classy stayer with plenty of Group runs who can handle the kilos and take this out.

#5 Secessio ($5)

Waller’s five-year-old also comes via the same lead-up as the favourite when third in the McKell Cup and then sixth in the Stayers Cup. 2400m is going to suit better, are racing consistently, Rosehill track suits and handle any track conditions so firm or rain-affected won’t matter.

#2 Permit ($8.50)

Money coming for the veteran of Waller’s Winter Cup contingent, the seven-year-old having run sixth in the McKell before a trip to Melbourne on June 14 when fifth, beaten only 1.6 lengths, at Flemington over 2500m. Distance is ideal (11-5-1-0) and are yet to finish out of the money over the 2400m at Rosehill (3-2-1-0) so don’t discount, expect improvement as they return to Sydney.
