2014 Caloundra Cup Betting Tips

This Saturday one of the feature races running at Queensland’s Sunshine Coast Racecourse is the Caloundra Cup 2014 – betting tips and selections for which are listed below.

There are 11 gallopers still in the mix for this year’s $175,000 Listed Ross MacLean Fellowship Caloundra Cup (2400m) following the early withdrawal of Perfect Star.

Favourite of those at an easing $2.20 is the Ciaron Maher-trained Victorian raider Mr O’Ceirin.

They Postponed six-year-old has been racing exclusively in Group company this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival including their second in the Hollindale Stakes and Eagle Farm Cup.

Last start they were caught wide and ran a luckless fifth to Floria in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m), an effort they get a chance to atone for on Saturday over the same distance, albeit with more weight carrying the 59kg top weight this weekend.

They are joined on single figures then by veteran stayer Brave Ali now representing the Brisbane stables of Tony Gollan and coming off an Ipswich Cup win, and Sydney galloper Ironstein for Gerald Ryan both paying $5.

So are these three under $10 the ones to lock into your Caloundra Cup trifecta tips?

Or is there value to be found further down the Caloundra Cup betting markets from the likes of Mark Ashby’s Group 1 performing Sebring colt Bring Back ($11) or last year’s winner Zennista ($17)?

#2 Brave Ali ($5)

Tony Gollan won’t be trackside but the stable is flying this winter, including the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 quinella, and we are tipping that form to continue here. Brave Ali joined the Brisbane stable this autumn and hasn’t put a foot wrong winning all but one of their five runs in Queensland. Dual stakes winner in the sunshine state too most recently in the Ipswich Cup over 2150m a fortnight ago. Drop back half a kilo to 56kg here so meet the favourite three kilos better in the weights. Need to handle their first 2400m run but have performed well up to 2200m and are in top form with Jim Byrne in the saddle.

#1 Mr O’Ceirin ($2.20)

Ciaron Maher-trained six-year-old is the classiest in the field with lots of Group 1 form to follow and don’t think there’ll be too much in the finish. Fifth over the distance in the Brisbane Cup last start, which produced last year’s winner Zennista, but it was a forgivable run. They should get a better run here but will need to stay focused from the inside alley. Rain will help but the 59kg is pretty hefty even against this easier class of rivals.

#10 Denwood ($41)

One of the real roughies in this race, we are tipping an upset for third with Denwood to surprise. Locally trained by Darryl Hansen the Greenwood Lake five-year-old comes via a fifth to The Inventor in last Saturday’s Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m). On a short back-up but they’re striking while the iron is hot and look ready for the step up in distance. Only 1.6 lengths off them and the winner in the Tatt’s Cup and get the same barrier (4) and minimum weight (54kg) here allowing them to replicate or improve.

Whether you’re taking us up on our Caloundra Cup betting tips, or have a roughie rated special to win, place your bets online at Ladbrokes.com.au and have it refunded as a bonus bet up to $50 if your first fixed win bet finishes second best!
