Runaway Sydney premiership winner Chris Waller will focus all of his energies on chasing down his own record at Rosehill this weekend, and will scratch race favourite Mamwaazel from their Sunshine Coast Guineas 2014 assignment in Queensland on Saturday.
Waller dominates the acceptances at Rosehill with 24 horses originally set to line up across the eight race program on Saturday as he chases his own Sydney training record 167-1/2 winners for a season that he set in 2012-13.
To help get him there the champion has then opted not to chase Black Type success at Queensland’s Caloundra Cup Day 2014 on the weekend.
Mamwaazel comes out of the field for the $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) for which the Exceed And Excel filly was $4.40 favourite to win.
That paves the way for the first emergency Fast Arrow ($21) to gain a start, the in-form local Mick Mair-trained Lion Heart gelding chasing their fourth win from six starts.
Instead Mamwaazel, last seen running fourth in a Benchmark 75 over 1500m at Rosehill on June 14, will stay at home for the $85,000 Theraces.com.au Handicap (1350m).
“The smaller field at Rosehill helps Mamwaazel and she will get her chance for some black type as an older horse,” Waller’s racing manager Liam Prior told AAP.
Allocated 59kg for the race, the apprentice claim for Serg Lisnyy will bring her down to a very favourable 50.5kg lightweight that is a full eight kilos less than she carried last start.
She is currently paying $5.50 as the third favourite for the Rosehill race, markets led by the flying David Vandyke-trained In A Knot.
Representing Sydney in Queensland however will be the Ironstein with trainer Gerald Ryan deciding to scratch the veteran stayer from the $100,000 Listed Winter Cup (2400m).
Instead the Zabeel eight-year-old, whose swansong is scheduled for July 10 in the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m), will take on their last start conqueror in the $175,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m).
A fortnight back they ran one and a quarter lengths away fourth to Brave Ali in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) and on Saturday they again take on the Tony Gollan-trained stayer.
Caloundra Cup betting is firmly led by Ciaron Maher’s Melbourne raider Mr O’Ceirin ($2.10) while Brave Ali and Ironstein are tied on $5.
