Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller’s visiting Sydney filly Mamwaazel has opened narrow favourite in the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2014 betting marketsfor the sole Group race of the weekend down under.
One of three Black Types held at Corbould Park on Saturday, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) features a capacity field of three-year-olds.
Of the bumper line-up it is Exceed And Excel filly Mamwaazel sitting top of the latest Sunshine Coast Guineas odds at $4.40.
Drawn well in barrier six with Chris Munce to ride she has winning form up to 1400m in Sydney this campaign in a fillies only Benchmark 75.
Last start on June 14 she ran fourth in an open sex field over 1500m at Rosehill, an effort she’s tipped to improve on as she goes up to the mile having now been up against the boys.
Mamwaazel also drops back from 58.5kg in her past two runs to just 55kg on Saturday under the set weights conditions so should relish the lighter weight.
Hot on her heels in the markets at $4.80 is then the Sunshine Coast Guineas market mover Architect.
They’ve drawn poorly out in gate 17, into 15 if the three emergencies come out of the capacity 18 starter field, but money is still coming for David Lawlor’s Bel Esprit gelding.
Trained in Brisbane the up-and-comer has been working their way through the grades this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and are Group 2 performed.
They ran under one and a half lengths away fifth to Sacred Star in the QTC Cup over 1300m on Oaks Day at Eagle Farm before a second at Ipswich and then a last start win back in Brisbane last Saturday.
Architect then is on the short turnaround and also goes up from 1200m seven days earlier to the mile here which they see for the first time.
There are then two other single figure chances in the markets with Palmera Lad ($5) and Hopfgarten ($6.50).
Roslyn Pratt’s Tale Of The Cat gelding Palmera Lad ran seventh in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) on May 31 but were sixth behind Architect after that last Saturday.
They should appreciate going back up in distance here however and will also relish any rain having finished third in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) at the start of their prep on a Heavy (8) track.
The Robert Heathcote-trained Hopfgarten meanwhile flew to four straight wins in Brisbane during March and April including a Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) on April 26.
Things came undone they when 14th in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at their next run where they jumped awkwardly, were pushed out and back and couldn’t make up the ground.
Their lead-up run to this though was an improved fourth behind Sir Moments in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) and they should enjoy the mile again on the weekend.
It’s a pretty open affair for the Guineas after those under $10.
Next best in betting at $13 is the Kelly Schweida-trained recent Ipswich winner L’Entrecote with work to do from out wide.
Also in the mix are the likes of stabelmates Smart Huss ($15) and the rails-drawn Comacina ($17), along with Craig Smith’s Rakti filly Performia ($17) coming off a win at Dalby and with stakes form over the Eagle Farm mile earlier this prep.
