Mr O’Ceirin Tops 2014 Caloundra Cup Field & Weights

Ciaron Maher’s Melbourne raider Mr O’Ceirin will lead out Saturday’s Caloundra Cup 2014 field as the top weight in the Sunshine Coast feature.

The headline race at Corbould Park’s biggest day of racing this year’s $175,000 Listed Ross MacLean Fellowship Caloundra Cup (2400m) features a field of 12 stayers.

Topping the Caloundra Cup field and weights with a rating of 104 and 59kg is then Postponed six-year-old Mr O’Ceirin.

Due to jump from the inside alley with Glen Colless riding, the Caulfield-based galloper comes off a string of decent Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival runs.

Their best efforts were a second to subsequent Doomben Cup winner Streama in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast and a second again two runs later in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) behind Moriarty.

Last start Mr O’Ceirin was seen carrying 57kg to a fifth behind Floria in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) on June 7.

They’re up three kilos in the weights here then over the same distance so even with the step back in class could struggle with the 59kg.

Following Mr O’Ceirin with 56kg is then the likely Caloundra Cup betting favourite Brave Ali drawn ideally in barrier three with Jim Byrne in the saddle, Byrne replacing the suspended Tegan Harrison on Saturday.

Veteran seven-year-old Brave Ali shoots for their fifth win from six starts here, the in-form O’Reilly gelding hailing from the Group 1 winning Brisbane stables of Tony Gollan.

Last time out they won the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) and are set for another big run here over the mile and a half as they drop back half a kilo.

Also coming via a nice Ipswich Cup run from June 14 is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Ironstein.

They ran fourth beaten only one and a quarter lengths, the Zabeel eight-year-old a dual acceptor across two states this Saturday.

Set for retirement after a run in Grafton Cup this winter, Ironstein is also accepted in the 10-horse field for the $100,000 Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill.

The Sydney showdown is the preferred option where they get in with 54.5kg, they have 55.5kg in the Caloundra Cup, meaning the Queensland feature could be down to 11 runners at jump time on Saturday.

Another notable Caloundra Cup hope and the only other above the 54kg minimum is then Lisa Latta’s defending champion Zennista.

The visiting New Zealand-trained Zenno Rob Roy mare won last year’s Caloundra Cup on the back of an excellent Brisbane lead-up including a Brisbane Cup third over the 2400m.

This year her Brisbane Cup run left a lot to be desired when the six-year-old ran a distant eighth in an effort she’ll be out to improve on.

She’s up in the weights however, but if the rain comes for the weekend a Heavy track will aid her cause.

Other notable hopes include Mt Gambier Gold Cup winner Luckzat who ran dead last in the Ramsden Stakes on May 24 over the two miles, Alan Jones’ local hope Clonmacnoise coming off a fourth over the track and distance in the wet from a month ago and Denwood last seen running a close fifth in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

Another galloper coming off a Group lead-up is then Sebring three-year-old Bring Back, Mark Ashby’s youngster taking on the older rivals here after finishing under three lengths away sixth to Sonntag in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at the start of the month.
