Glasshouse Handicap 2014 Field & Barriers

A bumper line-up of middle distance gallopers is engaged to face off in the 2014 Glasshouse Handicap field at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday as part of Caloundra Cup Day.

Running as Corbould Park Race 6 at 3:05pm this year’s $175,000 Listed Reed Property Group Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) has attracted 16 final acceptors.

Heading the Glasshouse Handicap field and weights with 59.5kg is Tony Gollan’s last start Eye Liner Stakes winner at Ipswich Alma’s Fury.

Gollan, who also saddles up 2014 Caloundra Cup favourite Brave Ali, celebrated a Listed double at Ipswich on July 14 and is looking to repeat the feat with the same two horses at Caloundra this weekend.

Refuse To Bend six-year-old Alma’s Fury will need to be at their best however to back up from their Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) success to win the Glasshouse as they go up in distance and weights.

They’ve drawn barrier 11 with Jim Byrne staying on, so also have the double digit barrier to contend from.

Second heaviest weighted Glasshouse Handicap hope this year with 58.5kg is then another widely-drawn hope, Kelso Wood’s Brahms eight-year-old Belltone drawn in barrier 15.

Chris Munce rides the veteran gelding who has been well beaten in their two most recent runs including a 16th to Sunshine Coast-trained River Lad in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) with only 53.5kg on June 7.

Belltone ran third in last year’s Glasshosue Handicap however on the back of the same finish (16th) in the Stradbroke carrying 59kg, half a kilo less than their weight on Saturday with a wet track the key to their form turnaround.

Other hopes with outside gates then include the Trevor Miller-trained Adeladie Cup winner Muir (12), Gold Coast galloper Startsmeup (13) coming off a seventh in the Eye Liner and the Pat Duff-trained Steel Zip (14) who ran sixth in both the QTC Cup and Eye Liner.

The rails run meanwhile belongs to the Brian Smith-trained Jetset Lad to jump from barrier one with apprentice hoop Anthony Allen in the saddle.

Elusive City six-year-old Jetset Lad comes off back-to-back fourths, firstly in NZ over the mile on a Heavy (10) track from May 17 and then to Alma’s Fury in the Eye Liner Stakes where they had 54.5kg.

Along with Alma’s Fury there are two other last start winners in the mix on Saturday with the in-form That’llbgood and Auguste who shoots for their third on the trot.

Paul Duncan’s local Perfectly Ready mare That’llbgood has barrier five on Saturday and has won three of their past four runs, the latest being on a Heavy (9) track over the 1600m here on May 30 where they defeated Sweet And Vicious by one and a half lengths.

Fellow local, Len Treloar’s Exceed And Excel four-year-old Auguste meanwhile has won successive mile runs at Doomben the last being on June 18 in a Class 4 carrying 55.5kg, 1.5kg extra then their minimum weight allocation for the weekend.

Treloar has also accepted for Escoffier who has the outside barrier to contend from, the recent Gold Coast winner coming off a third at Eagle Farm from last Saturday carrying 57kg (they drop to 54kg on Saturday).

Other notable hopes then include former Group 1 winner Phelan Ready second-up this prep and Barry Lockwood’s consistent Ballina Cup winner Playitstraight who caught the eye when second to Alma’s Fury at Ipswich a fortnight ago.
