Tick Tick Bloom Wins 2014 Belmont Guineas – Results

Lark Hill horseman Adam Durrant secured back-to-back Belmont Guineas wins on the weekend after his smart filly Tick Tick Bloom beat home the boys in the winter showdown.

The highlight on the WA race card on Saturday, this year’s $100,000 Listed Warora Belmont Guineas (1600m) featured a bumper field of 15 three-year-olds with Viscount filly Tick Tick Bloom coming out on top.

Jockey William Pike opted for the ride on the in-form youngster over a host of other Belmont Guineas hopes, and it proved the winning move.

Pike guided Tick Tick Bloom ($5.50), who came off successive wins over 1650m at the track, to a tight win over the Grant Williams-trained Blackfriars filly Midnight Shimmer ($11).

It was an impressive late effort from the winner as she came from the back of the big field approaching the turn to nose out the runner-up with her brilliant finishing burst.

“It was very impressive,” stable foreman Jason Miller, filling in for Durrant who is on holidays in Europe, told The West Australian.

“I thought she had no hope on the turn.

“With the wide draw our confidence wasn’t high. We knew she’d have to give them about eight lengths on the turn.

“She was stepping up from midweek company in a tough field but she’s adapted and won well.”

Finishing off the winning trifecta and adding some value to the exotics was then Happy With Kendel ($21), who improved on a third to Saturday’s favourite Bayatorio back on June 7.

They held on to cross just a half-head away, hanging on for third after sharing the lead with Midnight Shimmer over the closing stages of the race.

Only three quarters of a length separated the Top Four then with Shane Quilty’s fellow outsider Dabang ($21) crossing for fourth.

Brett Pope’s Oratorio gelding Bayatorio meanwhile was disappointing as the $4.20 top fancy in the Guineas.

After settling in fourth they eventually finished nearly six lengths away from the winner in eighth after fading on the straight.

Tick Tick Bloom is owned by a collection of seven owners including a quartet of friends who met in the mines who also bred the filly: Daniel Palmateer, Glenn McNally, Ryan Hopkinson and Jason McGuire.

Her other owners who all enjoyed a share of the spoils on Saturday are then Dean Bailey, Dan Karic and Ann-Maree Harvey, everyone thrilled with the filly’s efforts this campaign.

“We just wanted a half-decent horse and to get one as good as this is unbelievable,” part-owner McNally said on Saturday.

“She is the second foal out of Eight Roses. The first one (Fly Like Pegasus) isn’t much good and is going around in Kalgoorlie.”

Durrant then celebrated successive Belmont Guineas victories after taking out the feature with Summah’s Touch last year.

Like Summah’s Touch who secured the winter Belmont Listed feature Triple Crown, Tick Tick Bloom will now target the $100,000 Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m) in two weeks’ time followed by the $100,000 Belmont Classic (2200m) on July 19.
