A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Tony Gollan’s last start Ipswich Cup winner Brave Ali heads a strong list of nominations taken for this Saturday’s Caloundra Cup 2014 on the Sunshine Coast.
While their trainer won’t be trackside on the weekend, O’Reilly seven-year-old Brave Ali will be flying the flag for Group 1 winning Brisbane horseman Gollan in the $175,000 Listed Ross Maclean Fellowship Caloundra Cup (2400m).
The race this year attracted 18 early entries including Brave Ali who, if accepted, shoots for a Queensland Winter Racing Carnival Cups’ double.
After a flying season that included a handful of wins and a third to Pretty Pins in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben the veteran enjoyed a win in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) on June 14 and is ready to do it again this time up the coast.
The next best over the line in the Ipswich Cup with claims in the Caloundra rematch is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Sydneysider Ironstein.
The rising Zabeel nine-year-old has been thereabouts all season improving as they go up distance including their fourth behind Brave Ali when beaten only 1.3 lengths.
Other Ipswich Cup graduates nominated for the Caloundra Cup then include Catalonia (6th), Angola (7th), High Kin (8th), High Aims (9th), Brayroan (10th) and Volkhere (11th).
The other big name Ipswich Cup nominee is then the Ciaron Maher-trained Postponed six-year-old Mr O’Ceirin.
Runner-up to Streama in the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast before their seventh in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m), Mr O’Ceirin was runner-up in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) two back and is out to improve on their Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) fifth to Floria when stepped down in class here.
Also coming via the Brisbane Cup is the top-rated Ipswich Cup hopeful, Lisa Latta’s New Zealand raider and defending Caloundra Cup champion Zennista.
The daughter of Zenno Rob Roy has had three starts down under this winter season, most recently finishing a weak eighth in the Brisbane Cup, a far cry from her third in the lead-up to her 2.5 length Caloundra Cup romp in the mud last year.
There’s also nice lead-up form from young Sebring colt Bring Back who goes into the Ipswich Cup as a Group 1 graduate having run three lengths way sixth to Sonntag in the Queensland Derby on June 7 over the same distance.
As for the Sunshine Coast locals some of those with a chance to keep the Cup at home include the Alan Jones-trained Clonmacnoise and the Darryl Hansen-trained Denwood who ran fifth to The Inventor in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
