Trainer Robbie Laing has confirmed exciting two-year-old Boomwaa has returned to work at his Cranbourne stables ahead of a busy 2014 Spring Racing campaign geared towards an appearance in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11th.
One of the busier two-year olds of the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, Boomwaa contested a total of eight race starts for one win and three minor places, more than stamping his claims as one to watch over major events this spring.
Having returned to galloping three weeks ago, Laing said he is pleased with the way the Mutawaajid gelding has taken to time in the spelling paddock and will be slowly eased into full work over the coming month.
“He’s done very well,” Laing told TVN.
“He’s doing some pre-training now and we’ll have him back doing some serious work soon.”
Yet to settle on a path for Boomwaa in preparation for the Caulfield Guineas, Laing said he is most likely to kick the season off with an appearance in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) on August 16th at Caulfield.
“That’s probably the race we’ll kick him off in,” Laing added.
Unlucky to finish third in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial (1000m) on debut in October, Boomwaa continued to build in form and class over late 2013; finishing fourth amongst classy company in the Inglis Banner (1000m) before breaking through for a maiden race victory in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) on November 9th.
Finishing second in two minor events over 1100 and 1200 first-up this year, the gelding out of Boom Boom Baby became the first two-year-old in more-than 20 years to contest the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) on February 15th and while finishing well off the pace in 10th, returned to competitive form amongst his own age when fifth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) just one week later.
Finishing fourth in the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last time out, Boomwaa is currently available at a particularly generous quote of $61 for success in early Caulfield Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
