2014 Sunshine Coast Guineas Nominations Released

A bumper 27 nominations were taken for this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m), one of three Black Type events on the Sunshine Coast program.

One of the most notable of those is the David Lawlor-trained Brisbane galloper Architect who comes off an Eagle Farm win from last Saturday.

Fifth to Sacred Star in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) earlier this prep, the Bel Esprit gelding was runner-up to Olympic Anthem at Ipswich two back before their big three and a half length romp in a 1200m handicap on Tattersall’s Tiara Day.

The next best over the line in that race, the $50,000 Hardy Brothers Jewellers QTIS 3YO Handicap who is nominated for the Guineas on Saturday is then the sixth-placed Palmera Lad who was five lengths off Architect.

They also ran in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Oaks Day last month.

Also coming off a win meanwhile is Len Treloar’s local Warhead filly Coruba Queen who is in flying form.

She’s won her past three straight, two at the track over 1300m and 1400m respectively, and then a 1350m mid-week at Doomben for fillies and mares on June 18.

One of the higher rated hopes in the race is then the Robert Heathcote-trained Mossman three-year-old Hopfgarten.

Winner of the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) on April 26 they failed in the Fred Best next run when 14th to Havana before an improved fourth last start behind Sir Moments in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) on June 7.

Another exciting nominee is the Shaune Ritchie-trained Kiwi visitor Abaddon having just their fourth career start here, the Stravinsky gelding having raced exclusively in Australia so far.

Other notable hopes include Bruce Hill’s Queensland Guineas graduate Bodega Negra (12th) and in-form local Lion Heart gelding Fast Arrow coming off six top two runs.

Sydney’s top horseman Chris Waller meanwhile has nominated for a trio of hopes with promising Exceed And Excel filly Mamwaazel, Magnus colt The Alfonso after their third straight win and another daughter of Exceed And Excel Sense And Reason who has won their past three Sydney starts.

Check out the full Sunshine Coast Guineas 2014 nominations below with final acceptances closing on Wednesday morning, the field to be published right here.
