Sixteen fillies and mares remain in contention for the crown in this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) running as Race 7 at 3:40pm (AEST).

Money is coming for the top fancies in the latest Tattersall’s Tiara odds with co-favourites Red Tracer and Cosmic Endeavour firming overnight into $4.80 to win.

Chris Waller saddles up the defending Tattersall’s Tiara winner Red Tracer who is looking to go back-to-back in the feature from another wide gate (14) after doing it from 16 of 16 last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Her main danger then is drawn far better in gate five with Tommy Berry riding the Gai Waterhouse-trained Cosmic Endeavour, the three-year-old coming off a win in the same race (Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes) Red Tracer won before her Tiara triumph last year.

There’s also been attention from the punters for Red Tracer’s stable mate Catkins into $5.50 who is the market mover here drawn in barrier one with Hugh Bowman to ride.

Finishing off the single figure Tiara chances this year at $6 is then Jim Cassidy’s mount Steps In Time who has been freshened up since a below part 13th in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last start.

So are these top hopes the ones to lock into your Tattersall’s Tiara First Four bets?

Or is there value to be found further down the markets from a longer priced hope such as Waterhouse’s Robert Sangster Stakes champ Driefontein ($11) or smart sprinter Avoid Lighting ($14) up in class and distance here?

#1 Red Tracer ($4.80)

Think Waller’s Dane Shadow six-year-old has what it takes to successfully defend her Tiara title and become the first dual winner in the race since Bonanova (1999-2000). She has a wide barrier (14) but overcame the outside gate (16) to win last year. She’s a dual Group 1 winner with plenty of class and can be forgiven for her Stradbroke 10th last time out. Will be fitter for that run and of the four Tiara winners to come via the Stradbroke in the past eight years, only one (Melito 2nd in 2010) ran a place in the lead-up. She’s got a nice Win Rate (41%) and good Place Rate (78%) and boasts the best record over the distance (11-5-3-1), track (5-3-0-0) and is also a three time winner over the Track & Distance from five starts so looks the one to beat.

#3 Steps In Time ($6)

Steps In Time retires after this race and so Cassidy will be giving her the best possible shot at bowing out a winner. Took out the Group 1 Coolmore Classic, beating a number of these including Catkins (3rd) at Rosehill two back over the 1500m. Went back to 1200m on a mud track at Randwick then for the TJ Smith when a distant 13th. Firmer ground, more distance on the back of a freshen-up and winning Warwick Farm trial and she’ll be much improved. Previous winner at the track and distance too back in June of 2011.

#14 Cosmic Endeavour ($4.80)

Plenty of money and love for Waterhouse’s Northern Meteor filly who shoots for her third straight here. Nice barrier (5), excellent hoop (Berry) and ideal lead-up. Two back she won the Inglis Scone Guineas over the 1400m in Sydney then scored over the same distance here at Eagle Farm in the Dane Ripper last start. That race was the form to follow last year with Red Tracer completing the double and don’t think there will be much in it again here.
