Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A top field of staying types is engaged to face off in the Tattersalls Cup 2014 at Eagle Farm this weekend, betting tips and selections for the handicap clash detailed below.
There are 12 hopefuls in the mix for this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) running as Tattersall’s Tiara Day Race 6 at 3:05pm (AEST) on Saturday.
Heading the latest Tattersall’s Cup odds at a quote of $2.60 is Rex Lipp’s Queensland Oaks winning filly Tinto.
The in-form Red Dazzler three-year-old has run top two in her three lead-up runs headlined by the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) here at Eagle Farm on May 31.
She’s had a three week freshen up then and is ready to take on the boys for the first time this prep in the Tattersall’s Cup where she’s drawn barrier one with Tim Bell staying on.
Next best in betting at a firming price of $3.80 is then Wish Come True, Glen Boss’ ride coming off a win at Moonee Valley over 2040m from June 7.
The other top fancies under $10 in the markets are then John Thompson’s Pretty Pins ($5) in gate two coming via a Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) fourth and the John Sargent-trained Iggi Pop ($8).
So should your Tattersall’s Cup betting selections come from these top four chances?
Or will there be an upset result from the likes of Garud ($10) who ran fifth in last weekend’s Ipswich Cup over 2150m or the 58kg top weight Military Move ($15) coming off a Toowoomba Cup win from the start of the month?
#4 Pretty Pins ($5)
We’re going with third pick in the markets for the win based on her excellent form this time in believing her deserving of another carnival win here. The Pins five-year-old won the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben three back and has been right up there in her two subsequent runs. Third in the Premier’s Cup and fourth in the Brisbane Cup last time out over 2400m. Will appreciate drop back in distance and gets in on 54kg minimum with gun draw (2) so plenty to like.
#3 Tinto ($2.60)
Group 1 winner last time out over 2400m here, back down in distance and class but is up against an open-sex-and-age field so needs to handle the testosterone and the older rivals. Rails run but if the rain comes that might not be ideal. Bracelet winner at the Gold Coast, then second in The Roses before her Oaks success. Bell aboard for all three of those runs and knows her well so him staying on is a plus.
#1 Military Move ($15)
Carry the 58kg top weight but think they have the class to handle that and still run well from an outside (10) draw. Kiwi raider prepared by Shaune Ritchie won the Toowoomba Cup (2150m) last start so distance is ideal, had 59.5kg there so drop in weight. Group form back in NZ and looks to just be hitting their stride down under in time for this.
