Travolta Tops 2014 Tattersall’s Open Mile Field

New Zealand Group 1 performer Travolta returns to racing this weekend at Eagle Farm in the Tattersall’s Open Mile 2014 which sees out Tattersall’s Tiara Day as Race 8.

There are 12 gallopers engaged in this year’s $100,000 Listed Centenary Classic Mercedes Benz Open Mile (1600m), the top-rated and weighted of which is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta.

First-up on the back of a three and a half month break, the Handsome Ransom five-year-old has been allocated a hefty 60kg and will be ridden by Nash Rawiller from barrier eight.

Travolta is a Kiwi expat having kicked off their career in New Zealand before joining Waterhouse in Sydney at the end of 2012.

A consistent performer for the stable, they had a big weight on their back in their last Australian start when third in the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley with 60kg back in February.

After that they were sent back to NZ for a shot at the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 5 where Rawiller guided them to a fourth.

They had 59kg that day and the weight got the better of them with the winner, Who Shot Thebarman, beating them by six lengths with their light 52.5kg allocation.

Two Sydney trials since then have prepared Travolta for their return on the weekend then where they will look to retain their perfect record over the mile with two previous wins over 1600m.

Waterhouse will also be represented in the race by in-form lightweight Queenstown getting in on the 54kg minimum.

Set to jump from an ideal barrier two draw with Tommy Berry, over from Hong Kong to also ride their stablemate Cosmic Endeavour in the Tattersall’s Tiara, the Stratum mare is second-up for the season.

Queenstown enjoyed a nice spring campaign last year including a third to Sertorius in the Group 2 Sandown Classic (2400m) before returning at Rosehill on May 31.

There they were third again, this time to Tromso over 1400m in an effort they’ll improve on second-up over more distance.

Following Travolta in the Tattersall’s Open Mile weights on 57.5kg are then the Robert Heathcote-trained Fire Up Fifi and John Thompson’s Transporter.

Bradbury’s Luck mare Fire Up Fifi is out to break a lengthy drought not having won a race since the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1410m) at Flemington last October.

She had a killer spring – summer prep that included two Group 1 thirds after that firstly to Red Tracer in the Myer Classic and then behind Luckygray in Perth’s Railway Stakes.

Things have been far more hit and miss this year however including her last start 12th when beating home just one other running, dropping off and finishing poorly in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago.

Along with Fire Up Fifi Heathcote has also accepted for Bianconi mare Fillydelphia coming off a sixth at the track over 1500m who will be ridden by Damian Browne.

Transporter meanwhile comes off a much better lead-up with the Command six-year-old having won the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap over this track and distance on June 7.

They’ve drawn barrier one for Saturday where they’ll shoot for back-to-back victories with Jim Byrne retaining the ride.

Other notable hopes then include Luke Price’s Show A Heart mare Belle De Coeur accepted for this over the Tatt’s Tiara on the back of her Dane Ripper Stakes third and the Bruce Hill-trained Gold Coast galloper Elmantosh coming off a third in the Strawberry Road behind Transporter.
