Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Rex Lipp is confident of another polished performance from stable star Tinto in this weekend’s Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm this weekend, as the three-year-old bids to become the first runner to secure the time-honoured event in the same season as claiming the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).
Producing a keen turn of foot to comfortably beat resounding favourite Arabian Gold to the line in the Oaks last time out, Tinto has arguably returned to the track in career-best condition over her current preparation, having finished outside the places just twice in six starts so far.
Previously unaware no runner has ever completed the Oaks/Tattersall’s Cup double, Lipp told AAP the Red Dazzler mare will return to the spelling paddock following this weekend’s tilt and is unlikely to return until the beginning of next year.
“It is interesting because a few people told me it was the first time anyone had attempted it,” Lipp said.
“She has had a long campaign going into the Oaks and she really wouldn’t have had a long enough spell had we decided to go to Melbourne.
“I sat down with the owners and we decided she could run in the Tatt’s, have a spell and then come back for the Stayers Cup at the Magic Millions in January.
“There are plenty of races for her and why knock her around after she has done such a good job. She is tough but you don’t want to overdo it with horses like her.”
Securing three race victories and two minor places from just 12 competitive starts to date, Tinto was unlucky to finish second in the RMA Engineers 3.y.o Handicap (1100m) first-up, and continued to build in form and class on her way to first in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) and second in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) prior to her Oaks triumph.
Confirmed alongside 11 competitors for the 2014 Tattersall’s Cup, Tinto will be partnered by regular jockey Tim Bell and will need to find top gear if to overcome a field including the likes of Military Move, Pretty Pins and Garud.
