Group 1 Golden Slipper champion Mossfun has returned to work this week ahead of what is likely to be a busy racing preparation over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
Contesting an impressive maiden preparation which delivered a total of four wins from just five appearances on course, Mossfun reportedly took well to her time in the spelling paddock and is yet to be confirmed for any specific event, but will be aimed towards sprint events according to co-trainer John Hawkes.
“She had a nice break and spelled really well and she’s matured a bit more,” Hawkes told AAP.
“She’s got a bit stronger. She was only a baby last time.
“We have got nothing in mind for her, but we’ll wait for a few weeks and see how she is.
“She’ll stick to sprints. She’ll start in Sydney but she might make her way down to Melbourne.”
Debuting with an impressive turn of foot to win the Inglis Nursery 2.y.o Open (1000m) on December 14th, Mossfun more than laid her claims as one to watch over the 2014 racing calendar with back-to-back victories in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) and Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m); the latter of which by more than four lengths.
Finishing second to standout Blue Diamond Stakes champion Earthquake in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Mossman filly ended her maiden campaign in the best way possible when registering a near-perfect ride in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th.
Likely to target major events for three-year-old fillies over spring, the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) appear very realistic targets for Mossfun and Team Hawkes.
