2014 Ipswich Cup Results – Brave Ali Completes Gollan Double

Tony Gollan’s in-form veteran Brave Ali completed a feature race double in Queensland on the weekend with their smart win in the Ipswich Cup 2014.

One race earlier Group 1 winning horseman Gollan won the Eye Liner Stakes with Alma’s Fury thanks to a gun ride from Jim Byrne, and the celebrations continued with success in the $175,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Coming off some very nice Brisbane form, including three straight wins and a third to Pretty Pins in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) last time out, O’reilly seven-year-old Brave Ali enjoyed their 12th career start in the Ipswich Cup.

They were ridden by young apprentice hoop Tegan Harrison who was happy for the consolation win after going down narrowly last weekend in Brisbane, just nudged out of the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap win when second aboard Temple Of Boom to River Lad.

“This time I was on the River Lad horse,” Harrison told The Courier Mail on Saturday.

This time though there was a length to spare in Harrison’s favour with Brave Ali ($7.50) beating home the Bryan Guy-trained Noisy Ocean ($14).

“When they put pressure on this horse, he just keeps fighting,” Harrison said.

“If something attacks him, he will keep fighting so long as he’s got his head in front.

“It was a long way from home and fortunately they ended up second best.”

In third just a further long neck away was then Brian Smith’s Refuse To Bend seven-year-old Grey Assignment ($9.50) finishing in the minor placings in a blanket finish with the Gerald Ryan-trained top weight Ironstein (4th) and equal favourite Garud (5th).

Under two length separated the first seven over the line in fact with equal $6.50 top fancy Angola for Pat Carey 1.8 lengths off Brave Ali in seventh.

It was a stellar effort from Brave Ali who was fresh off a five week let-up during which they spent time at Washpool Lodge, and one that capped off an incredible day for the stable.

“It’s unbelievable to think we could win the two features,” Gollan’s wife Jane said.

Gollan had Brave Ali targeted for the Ipswich Cup after their Chairman’s Handicap third on May 10, and confirmed they would now continue onto the $200,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) on June 28.

Then it will be onto Sydney for a shot at the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 10.

“We did plan it, I just wasn’t sure if I had the planning right,” Gollan said.

For extra assurance then Gollan gave Brave Ali a run doing even time on the course proper at Eagle Farm on Saturday morning before their trip west to Ipswich.

“You never get a real line on him with his trackwork, but looking at him he’d dappled up and looked super,” he said.

“I’m so proud of him.

“I can’t wait to get to the Sunshine Coast and I certainly can’t wait to get to the Grafton Cup.”
