2014 Ipswich Cup Betting Tips

This Saturday a big day of racing is scheduled for Ipswich Racecourse including the day’s headline event – the Ipswich Cup 2014.

Betting on this year’s $175,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m) has tightened up following the official withdrawal of the Peter Moody-trained Full Of Spirit who runs in Sydney instead this weekend.

The firming favourite in the Ipswich Cup odds in from $5.50 this morning to $4.60 is the Gerald Ryan-trained Ironstein.

There are a few things going against the veteran of the field, including the 58kg top weight the Zabeel eight-year-old must carry.

Ironstein is also winless since November of 2011 when they won the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).

Still they are the best tried and most experienced of this field with 61 starts to their name and were a close fourth over 1800m with the blinkers back on at Rosehill last time out.

There they carried the same weight they’re allocated for Saturday and beat a number of these same horses, an effort the bookies are tipping them to repeat.

It’s a tight market however with four of their rivals also under double figures including Michael Moroney’s Victorian raider Garud ($6.50) and flying Brisbane galloper Brave Ali ($7).

So can Ironstein win the Ipswich Cup? Or will the favourite go down?

#3 Brave Ali ($7)

Meets the favourite better in the weights with 56.5kg and are in hot form with smart apprentice Tegan Harrison, looking to atone for her narrow Stradbroke second last weekend, in the saddle. Tony Gollan’s O’reilly seven-year-old won three on the trot over similar distances recently in Brisbane (2100m, 2030m, 2128m) and then ran third last time out hanging on well after hitting the lead a bit early in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben on May 10. Is fresh, distance is ideal (11-6-2-0), hasn’t seen the track but handles Slow (4-2-1-1) and Heavy (5-2-1-1) going so with rain around looks the one to beat for sure.

#11 High Aims ($9)

55kg minimum for David Brideoake & David Feek’s Mornington visitor, the Southern Image mare coming off good form in Melbourne over less distance. She’s got winning form up to a mile and a half though so stepping up from a mile to this should be a non-issue. Won first-up in the Tatura Cup in April and then travelled to Caulfield on May 3 for a close third (0.4 lengths off Crucial) racing against her own type. Has had time to freshen-up since then and while this is a class test she’s doing well and worthy of the Black Type assignment.

#10 Garud ($6.50)

Another Victorian looking to plunder some sunshine state riches, drawn out wide in barrier 13 so will need to get the right run to feature in the finish. Think they can do that with the give out of the track though after an eye catching third over 2000m at Flemington on May 24.
