Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of the three feature races lighting up the Ipswich race card this weekend is the Eye Liner Stakes 2014, betting tips and selections for the handicap clash listed below.
There are 13 hopefuls facing off in the $175,000 Listed City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) this year, the event to run as Ipswich Race 6 at 3:05pm.
Of the quartet of acceptors under double figures in the Eye Liner Stakes odds the favourite is Black Cash ($4.80) who has been in a betting battle with the Chris Waller-trained Masthead ($5) all week.
The pair both ran in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm last start two weeks back, Kelly Doughty’s Gold Coast-trained grey Black Cash running fourth.
Masthead meanwhile ran a good second just a quarter length off the winner.
The Written Tycoon colt however goes up from 53kg there to 56.5kg on Saturday and also has barrier 12 to overcome after getting a better run from eight in the QTC Cup.
Outside of those two are then Into The Red ($7) and Alma’s Fury ($9) to round out the single figure fancies.
So are these top four the ones to lock into your Eye Liner Stakes exotics?
Or is there an upset on the agenda from a longer priced chance such as last start winners Regular or Ellawisdom both paying $11?
#8 Regular ($11)
Tipping an upset here with Bryan Guy’s Mearas four-year-old to beat them home after a narrow win over this distance at Doomben last start. They’re up in class but have now seen the distance, drop back from 57kg to the 54kg minimum here and should be able continue their rise through the ranks. They’ll come across from that gate (9) and probably set a solid pace. If they can hang on like they did last time by the narrow margin can enjoy some black type.
#4 Masthead ($5)
Will come very close is our guess, just worry about the weight up three and a half from their last start and where they’ll find themselves from the barrier (12). If they can stay out of trouble, handle the kilos and let Chris Munce do his job then expect another big finish and the QTC Cup form looks good. Couldn’t run Sacred Star down in the straight at Eagle Farm but can they do it this time against a somewhat easier field?
#6 Black Cash ($4.80)
Get the rails run and will be using it to their advantage. Fourth in the QTC Cup with two kilos less than their 55kg here in a close effort they’ll take improvement from. Probably suited more to a mile though but will be peaking third-up and expect the track here at Ipswich to suit as they, like Regular, are an on-pacer.
