Solid Bullet Shoots for Thousand Guineas 2014 Target

On Saturday in Adelaide unraced local filly Solid Bullet debuts at Morphettville looking to kick off a 2014 Thousand Guineas campaign this spring.

Trainer John Hyam has confirmed ambitions to head towards the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), run on Caulfield Guineas Day this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival on October 11, with his Encosta De Lago filly Solid Bullet.

“She goes really good,” Hyam told The Advertiser.

“We’re going to set her for the Thousand Guineas in the spring.”

She debuts as a two-year-old at home this weekend in the second on the card, the $35,000 Irish Race Day 30th August Handicap (1000m).

Facing a field of fellow two-year-olds, two of her 10 rivals also having their maiden start, Solid Bullet will be ridden by Sigrid Carr on 53.5kg getting an apprentice weight relief from barrier six.

The field is led by the Phillip Stokes-trained Duke Of Marmalade gelding Manhattan Prince who ran second in their two summer runs last year.

But with her light weight, Manhattan Prince the 58kg top weight, Solid Bullet is well placed to make an impact right off the bat.

She’s nicely bred too being a half-sister of Hyam’s eight-time winning God’s Own gelding Almighty Bullet who only just won over the Morphettville mile last Saturday.

Saturday will be her only start as a juvenile before she’s sent back out for a freshen-up ahead of a spring return where Hyam will get her out over more distance.

“She’ll have one run and then come back,” he said.

“I think she’ll be pretty smart when she gets out to a mile.”

Futures Thousand Guineas 2014 betting markets are already open at and led by the Darley-owned Blue Diamond Stakes winning filly Earthquake last seen running second to Mossfun in the Golden Slipper.

Unsurprisingly Solid Bullet doesn’t yet feature in these pre-nomination Thousand Guineas odds, but she soon will if she can win her first run and continue the good form ahead of her three-year-old season.
