Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Shaping as one of the most impressive fields of any Group 1 during the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, trainer Les Bridge has revealed he is seriously considering a trip north to contest the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 21st with in-form mare Avoid Lightning.
Returning to the track in arguably career-best form this season, the Blevic mare stormed home to win the Listed June Stakes (1100m) by three lengths at Royal Randwick last weekend, and is a particularly notable performer on damp tracks.
Claiming a total of three race wins and one second place over five starts this time in, Avoid Lightning will undoubtedly face her biggest test to date if confirmed for the Tattersall’s Tiara, with classy Chris Waller-trained pair Catkins and Red Tracer in line for appearances, as well as Gai Waterhouse stable mates Driefontein and Cosmic Endeavour, and Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) champion Steps In Time also a rumoured inclusion.
Appearing to be continuing to build in form and form and class with each race start, Bridge said he will ultimately allow the weather to dictate whether or not Avoid Lightning will make the trip north for the 2014 Tattersall’s Tiara.
“We’ll consider the Tatt’s Tiara, but weather will be the big thing,” Bridge told the Daily Telegraph.
“She’s pulled up terrific. I’ve been surprised.
“The way she sprinter on that wet track, not too many horses can do that.
“Even the jockey (Tim Clark) was surprised by how well she sprinter when he let her go.”
Contesting an impressive record of nine race victories and five minor places from just 21 career starts to date, Avoid Lightning was unlucky to finish fifth when blocked for a run in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute Quality (1200m) first-up on March 15th, but returned to the winner’s circle with an impressive turn of foot to claim the Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) ahead of a fast-finishing Plucky Belle on March 29th.
Continuing to stamp her claims for a Tattersall’s Tiara berth, the mare out of Ya Michelle finished second in the particularly well-contest Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on April 19th and won the At Sea Handicap (1100m) prior to her most recent triumph.
