Due to jump at 3:00pm as Eagle Farm Race 7, one race before the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2400m) is shaping up as a top showdown.

There’s a capacity field engaged with 18 starters plus two emergency runners, four of those now under double figures to win after strong money coming in for Tony Pike’s New Zealand filly Rock Diva ($11 into $9).

She’s had two runs down under, including a fourth in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks over this track and distance last Saturday, and looks ready to peak on the weekend.

The Queensland Derby betting markets meanwhile are led by Pinstripe Lane ($4.80) who was beaten into second, after a poor jump, in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) last start.

That’s the traditional Derby lead-up, their run was full of merit, and over more distance are considered a good chance to reverse the placings with the Chris Waller-trained Vilanova ($5).

The other runner at $5 to win the Derby this year is then up-and-coming Sydney galloper Elusive Runner who comes off great form back home but who is up in distance and sees their first Group field.

So are these the ones to lock into your Queensland Derby first four bets at Ladbrokes.com.au?

Or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the widely-drawn Grand Prix third placegetter Rudy ($12), the other Kiwi filly in the mix Telepathic ($12) or even Sonntag ($16) who earned this run after winning at Caulfield last start?

#16 Rock Diva ($9)

Pike’s daughter of Lucky Unicorn is three runs into her Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival raid following a sixth in The Roses and then her Queensland Oaks run when beaten three lengths over the 2400m at Eagle Farm last Saturday. She’s Group 1 placed over the mile and a half in the NZ Oaks and can improve on her run from last weekend where she drew the outside barrier (18). She made up lots of late ground there, like her Roses effort, and has real claims especially with a bit of rain falling pre-race.

#2 Vilanova ($5)

Not sure they can go back-to-back, especially from this gate (15 into 13), but really loved their Grand Prix performance where they comfortably beat many of these same rivals. Waller won this 12 months ago with Hawkspur who completed the Grand Prix – Derby double and think this classy son of Commands can come close to doing the same. Strike rate shows he doesn’t win a lot (22-3-3-4) but if he can do what he did at Doomben here at Eagle Farm will be the one to be on.

#1 Amexed ($17)

Really juicy price on Tony Gollan’s runner Amexed representing Brisbane’s boom stable here. They won two on the trot earlier in the season including a good effort over Telepathic in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) before their fourth in the Grand Prix. Think Eagle Farm will suit to a tee over more distance, but barrier 11 will need to be getting a gun ride from Michael Rodd who is more than capable of giving them that.
