This Saturday the Group racing at Eagle Farm gets underway with the fillies are mares facing off in the 2014 Dane Ripper Stakes – betting tips for which are outlined below.
There are 13 left in contention for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Virbac Animal Health Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) following the surprise scratching of Chris Waller’s top fancy Catkins.
With the Group 1 performed favourite out of contention the updated Dane Ripper Stakes oddsare led by the Gai Waterhouse-trained duo of Cosmic Endeavour ($4.60) and Driefontein ($6).
Northern Meteor filly Cosmic Endeavour comes off an Inglis Guineas win at Scone and is up against the older horses here while Robert Sangster Stakes champ Driefontein is down in class after two failed Group 1 runs on the back of her breakthrough elite level success in Adelaide.
Outside of those there are then two other single figure chances with the Luke Oliver-trained Belle De Coeur ($6.50) the big market mover on the back of her second to Stradbroke favourite Srikandi in the Glenlogan and the rails-drawn Peron ($7).
But are these the ones to beat and back?
Or is there value to be found further down the Dane Ripper Stakes markets from the likes of Aerobatics ($10) or Perth raider Platinum Rocker ($12)?
#1 Driefontein ($6)
More money on Waterhouse’s other runner but think Driefontein is the class horse in this race and has been a little overlooked based on her two recent losses. The four-year-old however won the Group 1 Robert Sangster before that in a fine effort and should appreciate an easier assignment here after a seventh in the Doomben 10,000. Was under three lengths off Spirit Of Boom that day, more room at Eagle Farm, Nash Rawiller stays on and gets a gate (5) under set weights so tipping improvement.
#13 Belle De Coeur ($6.50)
Market mover with it looking more and more likely like she’ll run in this and not the Stradbroke. Well, that’s always been a given but suddenly there’s been a plunge and we’re happy to follow the money. Michael Rodd rides this Show A Heart mare staying on after their good second to Srikandi last time out, the form of that race a chance to stack up in the Group 1 Straddie on Saturday too. Had barrier 7 there and is in the same gate for the weekend so one to watch.
#4 Fire Up Fifi ($13)
Local advantage for Rob Heathcote’s forgotten Bradbury’s Luck six-year-old. She’s had a tough go of late, including her last behind the Boom Brothers in the Victory Stakes two back, but can improve against her own kind here and not an open-sex field. Last start was in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) on May 17 where she was third behind River Lad. Good record at the track and with rain around should firm in these markets as she goes very well on both Slow (8-3-1-0) and Heavy (2-1-1-0) going.
