Aiming for a third consecutive race win in this weekend’s Group 2 after comfortably winning both the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens and Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben last time out, Hawkes told TVN that while undoubtedly facing his biggest test to date in the Brisbane Cup, the form and ability displayed by Zephyron since arriving at his team’s stable in 2012 point towards another impressive performance.

“We have taken him from a Class 1 to Group horse, he was flat out running five furlongs when we got him,” Hawkes said.

“He’s going to a mile and a half and it’s a little bit of a query. He’s won at 2200 metres in the Premiers Cup.

“We’re happy with him, he’s trained on really well and providing we get a decent track on the day I think he should run really well.

“He’s a promising young horse and this is a nice race for him at this stage of his career.”

Claiming an impressive total of five race wins and two minor places from just 15 competitive race starts to date, Zephyron has returned to the track in career best form this time in; finishing fifth amongst classy company in the Pro-Ride 3.y.o+ (1600m), and while unlucky to be blocked for a run in the Group 3 Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) on April 26th, reverted to devastating form over his two most recent starts.
